Baseball Sweeps Wilmington in OAC Action

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team swept Wilmington College in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader on Tewksbury-Delaney Field.

BW (16-12, 5-7 OAC) won game one by a score of 19-1 and took game two by a final of 14-3.

In game one, the Yellow Jackets scored 19 runs on 20 hits which included five doubles.  BW scored four runs in the third inning, two in the fourth and fifth innings, seven in the seventh and senior infielder C.J. Griffin (North Royalton/Lutheran West) closed out the scoring in the ninth with a grand slam. Wilmington (7-21, 2-8 OAC) scored its only run in the bottom half of the third. 

At the plate, the Yellow Jackets were led by junior right fielder Alex Marcum (Granville) as he went three-for-four with a run batted in (RBI). In addition, junior centerfielder Chase Knodle (Poland/Seminary) went two-for-five with four RBI, senior first baseman Kevin Hagen (Brecksville/St. Ignatius) went two-for-three with three RBI and junior third baseman Spencer Badia (Bellaire) went two-for-four with three RBI.

On the bump, junior All-OAC starter Evan Lovick (Mentor) improved to 5-1 on the season as he only allowed five hits and one run in six innings of work. Sophomore Danny Cody (Brecksville/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) earned his first career save as he held the Quakers scoreless in three innings with six strikeouts.

In game two, BW scored 14 runs on 22 hits as it score one run in the first off a solo homer from senior All-OAC designated hitter Cole Nieto (Brunswick/St. Ignatius), one run in the second and third innings, two in the fourth, eight in the fifth and one insurance run in the ninth. Wilmington scored two runs in the sixth and one in the ninth.

Offensively, Marcum went three-for-three with four RBI and a three-run homer in the Yellow Jacket eight run fifth inning. In addition, Badia went three-for-four, Hagen went three-for-four and senior shortstop Steve Montgomery (Canton/Central Catholic) went two-for-four with two RBI.

Senior All-OAC starter Logan Heffernan (Lebanon) picked up his third win of the season as he put in five innings of work, only allowed three hits and held Quakers scoreless. Sophomore Brandon Lekan (Strongsville) came in out of the bullpen and recorded three outs before surrendering one hit and two runs. Sophomore Dominic Francis (Medina/Brunswick) pitched a hitless and scoreless seventh and eighth innings. In the ninth the Yellow Jackets called on sophomore Jack Raines (Uniontown/Akron Archbishop Hoban) and he surrendered two hits and a run.

BW is back in action on Wednesday, April 19 when it hosts Ohio Northern University in an OAC doubleheader on Fisher Field.
