Wells Hits Walk-Off to Lift Baseball Past No. 5 Wooster

BEREA, Ohio – Sophomore pinch hitter Philip Wells (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate) hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to lead the Baldwin Wallace University baseball team to a 6-5 non-conference victory against No. 5-nationally ranked The College of Wooster Fighting Scots on Fisher Field.

BW (20-13), who has broke the 20-win mark for the sixth straight season, scored six runs on 12 hits. The Yellow Jackets scored off a solo homerun by senior designated hitter Cole Nieto (Brunswick/St. Ignatius), four in the sixth to tie the game at 5-5 off back-to-back homers by senior first baseman Kevin Hagen (Brecksville/St. Ignatius) and freshman second baseman Jacob Bonner (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) and the walk off single in the ninth to win it. Wooster (25-6) scored two runs in the first inning and one run in the second, fourth and sixth innings.

At the plate, BW was led by Hagen as he went two-for-four with a three-run homer and a lead off double in the ninth. In addition, junior catcher Trent Kaltenbach (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) went three-for-four, Nieto went two-for-three with a solo homer and Bonner went two-for-four with a solo homer.

On the mound, sophomore Brandon Lekan (Strongsville) started and pitched an inning and one-third as he allowed one earned run on two hits. Freshman Max Adams (Massillon/Washington) pitched two and two-thirds innings as he struck out two batters and allowed just one hit and one run. Sophomore Dominic Francis (Medina/Brunswick), freshman Spencer Aukerman (Medina) and sophomore Danny Cody (Brecksville/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) each put in one inning of work. Aukerman allowed one run on one hit in the sixth. Junior All-OAC pitcher Evan Lovick (Mentor) pitched the final two innings and picked up his seventh win of the season as he held the Fighting Scots hitless and struck out three batters. 

BW will be back in action on Saturday, April 29 when it hosts Muskingum University in its final Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader on Seniors' and Parents' Day at Fisher Field. Game one starts at 1 p.m. and game two is slated for 4 p.m.
