Baseball Splits a Pair of OAC Games with Marietta

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team split a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference games to Marietta College on Fisher Field. 

Marietta (9-10, 4-2 OAC) scored three runs in the top of the 11th inning to win the extra affair first game by a score of 4-1.  BW (14-10, 3-5 OAC) took the second game as it rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning to pick up the 6-2 victory.

In game one, the Yellow Jackets scored one run on eight hits as they plated their only run of the game in the third inning.   Marietta scored four runs on seven hits as it scored one run in the second inning and three in the 11th inning.

BW was led by senior All-OAC designated hitter Cole Nieto (Brunswick/St. Ignatius) as he went 2-for-4 with one run batted-in (RBI).  Junior center fielder Chase Knodle (Poland/Seminary) and junior catcher Trent Kaltenbach (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) each went 2-for-5.  Junior third baseman Spencer Badia (Bellaire) had the other base knock as he went 1-for-5 with the game's only extra base hit with a double 

On the mound, junior All-OAC left hander Evan Lovick (Mentor) started the game and got a no-decision as he pitched nine innings and allowed one run (unearned) on five hits with eight strikeouts and three walks.  Freshman right hander Danny Cody (Brecksville/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) suffered the loss as he pitched 1.1 innings and allowed three runs on one hit with a strikeout and walk.  Sophomore left hander Jack Raines (Uniontown/Akron Archbishop Hoban) pitched the final two-thirds and did not allow a run on one hit with two strikeouts. 

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored six runs on nine hits as they plated one run in third inning and exploded for five runs in the eighth.  The Pioneers scored two runs on six hits as it scored one run in both the third and sixth inning.

BW was led by Nieto as he went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Knodle also batted 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Five other BW players recorded a base knock. 

On the bump, sophomore Brandon Lekan (Strongsville) started the game and got the no decision as he allowed two runs on three hits with two strikeouts and three walks in six innings pitched.  Freshman left hander Michael Hubert (Cincinnati/Oak Hills) picked up his first collegiate win as he pitched the final three innings and did not allow a run on four hits with one strikeout and one walk.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, April 11 when they travel to Tiffin for a pair of OAC games against Heidelberg University at Peaceful Valley at 1 p.m.  The next home games are on Wednesday, April 19 when the team hosts an OAC doubleheader against Ohio Northern University on Fisher Field at 1 p.m.
