Nieto Hits for Cycle during Baseball Sweep of Pitt-Bradford (Pa.)

NEW MARKET, Va. – Senior centerfielder Cole Nieto (Brunwick/St. Ignatius) hit for the cycle in game two  of non-conference doubleheader sweep for the Baldwin Wallace University baseball team against  the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford (Pa.) in a non-conference doubleheader inside Rebel Stadium.

BW (5-0) won game one by a score of 22-1 and took game two by a score of 14-5.

In game one, the Yellow Jackets scored six runs in the second inning, seven in the fourth, five in the fifth, one in the sixth and three in the eighth. Pitt.-Bradford (1-2) scored its only run in the top of the first.

At the plate, BW recorded a season-high 21 hits led by senior right fielder Alex Marcum (Granville) as he went three-for-four with a double and four runs batted in (RBI).  Freshman second baseman Jacob Bonner (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) and junior third baseman Spencer Badia (Bellaire) each recorded three RBI. Bonner went two-for-three and Badia went two-for-four.

On the bump, sophomore pitcher Danny Cody (Brecksville/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) improves to 2-0 on the year as he pitched five innings, recorded five strikeouts and only allowed one earned run. Freshmen pitchers Ian Hennessey (Strongsville), Michael Hubert (Cincinnati/Oak Hills) and Spencer Aukerman (Medina) held the Panthers scoreless and only allowed one hit in four innings of relief. Hennessey pitched two innings, Hubert got the call the eighth and Aukerman struck out the side in the ninth.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored three runs in the third inning, four in the fourth, one in the sixth, three in the seventh, one in the eighth and two in the ninth. Pitt.-Bradford scored two runs in the fifth inning, two in the eighth and one in the ninth.

At the plate, Nieto recorded his first career cycle and the school's first since Mike Farrell hit for the cycle on April 14, 2005 against the University of Mount Union. Nieto went four-for-six with a three-run homerun and five RBI. In addition, sophomore leftfielder Reese Albright (North Royalton) went four-for-five with a triple and one RBI.

Senior pitcher Logan Heffernan (Lebanon) picked up his second win of the season with four innings of work, five strikeouts and did not allow an earned run. In relief, junior Brandon Wysong (Bradford) pitched two innings, sophomore Jack Raines (Uniontown/Akron Archbishop Hoban) threw in the eighth and Mitch Kern (Parma/Normandy) pitched in the ninth.

BW is back in action when it travels to Fort Myers, Florida for its annual spring trip where it will face Elms (Mass.) College in a non-conference doubleheader on inside Terry Park. Game one will start at 9 a.m. and game two is slated for 12 p.m.
