Baseball Drops a Pair of Non-Conference Games at Benedictine (Ill.)

LISLE, Ill. – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team dropped a pair of non-conference games against Benedictine University inside the Village of Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex.

Benedictine (23-15) came from behind to win game one by a score of 10-6 and scored five runs in the ninth to take game two by a final of 5-4.

In game one, BW (22-15) scored six runs on 10 hits as they scored off a two-run homer by sophomore designated hitter Philip Wells (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate) in the first inning, three runs in the third highlighted by a two-run jack by senior second baseman Cole Nieto (Brunswick/St. Ignatius) and one in the ninth. The Eagles scored one run in the third inning, hit a three-run homerun in the fourth and another in the fifth to take the lead for good and tacked on one run in the sixth and two in the eighth.

Offensively, Nieto led the way as he went three-for-four with a two-run bomb in the third. In addition, junior centerfielder Chase Knodle (Poland/Seminary) went two-for-four with a run batted in (RBI) and junior catcher Trent Kaltenbach (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) went two-for-four.

On the mound, senior All-OAC starting pitcher Logan Heffernan (Lebannon) was handed the loss and put in five innings of work as he allowed five hits and six earned runs with two strikeouts. In relief, sophomore Jack Raines (Uniontown/Akron Archbishop Hoban) pitched two and one third innings as he allowed three hits and two runs with four strikeouts. Freshman Spencer Berg (New Albany) got the final two outs for BW.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored four runs on seven hits as it score one run in the second, fourth, fifth and ninth innings. Benedictine scored all five of its runs in the bottom of the ninth to win the game in walk-off fashion.

Sophomore starting pitcher Brandon Lekan (Strongsville) recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts in six scoreless innings of work. Sophomore reliever Danny Cody came in for two innings as he allowed four hits and four runs. Freshman Michael Hubert (Cincinnati/Oak Hills) relieved Cody in the ninth and allowed two hits and a run.

At the plate, junior right fielder Alex Marcum (Granville) and Kaltenbach each tallied two hits each. Marcum went two-for-three with two RBIs and Kaltenbach went two-for-four with a RBI.

BW is back in action on Sunday, May 7 when it hosts Case Western Reserve University in a non-conference doubleheader on Fisher Field. Game one starts at 1 p.m. and game two is slated for 4 p.m.
