Baseball Falls to Case Western Reserve in Season Finale Doubleheader

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball fell to Case Western Reserve University in its season finale non-conference doubleheader on Fisher Field.

Case Western Reserve (24-15) won game one by a score of 8-5 and took game two by a score 8-5 off a three-run homerun in the 10th inning.

In game one, BW (22-17) scored five runs on six hits as it scored one run in the fourth and four in the eighth. The Spartans scored one in the fourth and sixth innings, five in the seventh and one in the eighth.

Offensively, the Yellow Jackets were led by senior first baseman Kevin Hagen (Brecksville/St. Ignatius) as he went a perfect four-for-four with two runs batted in (RBI). Along with Hagen, junior catcher Trent Kaltenbach (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) went one-for-two with a RBI.

On the mound, junior All-OAC pitcher Evan Lovick (Mentor) fell to 8-2 on the year as pitched seven innings, recorded six strikeouts and allowed 14 hits and seven runs. Freshman relievers Max Adams (Massillon/Washington) and Spencer Berg (New Albany) each pitched an inning for BW. Adams allowed one hit and one earned run and Berg pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored five runs on 11 hits as they scored one run in the fifth inning, three runs in sixth, tied the game off a RBI double by freshman left fielder Dudley Taw (Sheffield Lake/Brookside) in the ninth and had the bases loaded with one out in the 10th but Case Western Reserve rolled a 5-4-3 double play to end the game.  The Spartans score one run in the first and fifth innings, two in the sixth, one in the seventh and senior centerfielder Aaron Cain hit the game-winning three-run homerun in the top of the 10th.

At the plate, BW was led by Taw as he went two-for-five with the game tying double in the ninth, a triple and one RBI. In addition to Taw, junior centerfielder Chase Knodle (Poland/Seminary) went two-for-two.

Freshman starter Spencer Aukerman (Medina) pitched four and one-third innings as he tallied two strikeouts and allowed three hits and two runs. Freshman reliever Michael Hubert (Cincinnati/Oak Hills) came in out of the pen and put in three and two-thirds innings of work and allowed four hits and three runs. Sophomore Danny Cody (Brecksville/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) pitched a scoreless ninth inning and only allowed one hit. In extras, sophomore relievers Dominic Francis (Medina/Brunswick) recorded one out and Jack Raines (Uniontown/Akron Archbishop Hoban) got the final two outs, but fell to 1-1 on the year.
