Baseball Sweeps Muskingum on Seniors’ and Parents’ Day

BEREA, Ohio– The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team closed out the Ohio Athletic Conference portion of its schedule with a sweep against Muskingum University on Seniors' and Parents' Day at Fisher Field.

BW (22-13, 10-8 OAC) won game one by a score of 9-3 and took game two by a final of 1-0.

In game one, the Yellow Jackets scored nine runs on 11 hits as it scored two runs in the first inning, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, three in the seventh and one in the eighth.  Muskingum (15-20, 5-10 OAC) scored one run in the fourth and two in the seventh.

Junior All-OAC starter Evan Lovick (Mentor) tied a single-season school record as he earned his eighth win of the season. Lovick pitched seven innings, struck out three batters and only allowed six hits in three runs. Freshman reliever Max Adams (Massillon/Washington) pitched a scoreless final two innings and only allowed two hits with a strike out.

At the plate, BW was led by senior first baseman Kevin Hagen (Brecksville/St. Ignatius) and senior shortstop Steve Montgomery (Canton/Central Catholic) as they each recorded two hits and added an RBI. Sophomore left fielder Reese Albright (North Royalton) also went two-for-three.

In game two, BW scored the only run of the game when sophomore pinch hitter Philip Wells (Buffalo, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate) singled to score junior right fielder Alex Marcum (Granville) in the sixth inning.

Defensively, senior All-OAC starter Logan Heffernan (Lebanon) pitched his first compete game of the season. Heffernan pitched nine scoreless innings and allowed seven hits with three strikeouts.

Offensively, junior catcher Trent Kaltenbach (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) and junior centerfielder Chase Knodle (Poland Seminary) led the way as they each went two-for-three at the plate.  

BW is back in action on Friday, May 5 when it travels to Mishawaka, Indiana for a non-conference doubleheader against Benedictine (Ill.) University on the Richard C. Patterson Field at Jenkins Stadium.
