Women’s Soccer Holds off Penn State Behrend for Season Opening Victory

ERIE, Pa. – The Baldwin Wallace University women's soccer team opened the 2023 season by holding off Penn State Behrend College in the first game of the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament hosted inside Behrend Stadium.

BW (1-0) scored two first half goals and added the insurance goal 16 minutes into the second half for the win.  Penn State Behrend (0-1) cut the Yellow Jacket lead down to one with 14 minutes remaining in the first half and scored their second and final goal with just over five minutes remaining in regulation.

First Half (BW, 2-1)

  • Freshman forward Kaylyn Rich (Lynchburg /Lynchburg-Clay) scored her first collegiate goal of the assist from junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Sydney Rice (North Royalton) at the 10:47 mark        
  • Rice found the back of the net off the assist from Rich at 27:18.
  • Kristi Buckenheimer scored an unassisted goal at the 31:14 mark

Second Half (BW, 3-2)

  • Rice scored second goal off the game off the second assist from Rich at 61:18
  • Mia Zec found back of the net off the assist from Buckenheimer at the 84:55 mark.

BW is back in action on Sunday, September 3 when it closes out the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament with a non-conference game against Fredonia (N.Y.) University at 1 p.m.

The Yellow Jackets play their home opener on Tuesday, September 5 when they host a non-conference game against Oberlin College on Tressel Field inside the George Finnie Stadium at 7 p.m.
