BEREA, OHIO - The Baldwin Wallace College women's soccer team lost to Ohio Athletic Conference rival Capital University, 3-1, today (Tuesday, October 21, 2008) on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea.
B-W falls to 6-6-3 and 3-3 in the OAC, while Capital improves to 8-5-2 and 3-3 in the OAC.
In the first half, B-W opened the scoring only 3:55 into the match when senior All-OAC midfielder Allie Wojtkun (North Olmsted/Magnificat) scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season off an assist from junior All-OAC defender Stephanie Geiger (Berea). However, Capital answered only six minutes later when Jessica Sweet got behind the B-W defense and finished off a through ball from Kellie Gustin. The score remained tied until halfime.
In the second half, Capital's Katie Robinson scored the game-winner at the 64:20 mark off an assist from Samantha Shaffer. Robinson added the insurance goal at 76:57, which was assisted by Jenna Leonard.
In goal for B-W, sophomore Becky Miner (Berea) played all 90 minutes and faced 21 Capital shots and made nine saves. Her season record stands at 6-6-3.
Capital won the battle of shots, 21-7, and corner kicks, 5-2.
After 15 matches in 2008, the Yellow Jackets are led in scoring by Wojtkun with four goals and one assist for nine points and junior forward Natalie Fox (Canfield), who has three goals and one assists for seven total points. Sophomore midfielder Vickie Dreiling (Boardman/Cardinal Mooney) also has three goals and freshman forward Brittany Thomas (Westerville/ Central) has two goals and two assists.
B-W returns to action on Saturday, October 25 when it hosts Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College at 5:30 p.m. in the first game of a men's and women's soccer doubleheader. The B-W and Marietta men play at 7:30 p.m. This Saturday is also senior day as B-W will honor six soccer student-athletes.
