ANGOLA, Ind. – The No. 9 Nationally-Ranked Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team competed at the Trine (Ind.) University Invitational, inside the Keith E. Busse/Steel Dynamics Athletic and Recreation Center.
The flagship wrestler for BW was two-time Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference 157-pounder Nick Sbrocco (Perry) earned a first place finsih with18 points. Sbrocco won his first-round bout with a 5-2 decision and followed that with a 3-2 decision in the second round. For his quarterfinal match, he pinned his opponent in 3:48 and won by a 5-2 decision in the quarterfinal. His first place bout was won with a 3-2 decision.
Freshman 197-pounder Doug Byrne (Wickliffe), who placed second with a team-high 21 points. Byrne seized his first two matches with pins. The first was in 1:42 and the second in 1:10. The freshman won his quarterfinal bout with a 12-1 major decision and secured his semifinal with another, 1:51 pin. The Wickliffe native fell in his championship bout with an 8-6 decision.
Senior 149-pounder Aaron Kelly (Rocky River) placed second with 18 points. After a first-round bye, Kelly defeated his second-round opponent with a 10-2 major decision and won his quarterfinal match with a 16-0 tech fall. In his semifinal bout, the senior won by way of another 16-0 tech fall.
Junior National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-American 157-pounder Dalton Leightner (Ravenna/Rootstown) placed third with 18 points. He won his first two bouts by way of an 18-0 tech fall and a 2:08 pin. In the quarterfinal Leightner won by an 8-4 decision before falling in the semifinal bout.
Sophomore heavyweight Jarod Miller (Greenville, Pa./Reynolds) placed fourth with 16 points. Miller secured his first two matches with consecutive pins. He won his quarterfinal bout with a 16-0 tech fall before dropping the semifinal with a 5-1 decision. The sophomore claimed his semifinal consolation match by way of a 5-2 decision.
Freshman 133-pounder Zachery Anderson (Elyria/Midview) earned a fourth place finish with 14 points. Anderson lost his first bout by way of a 16-0 tech fall. He won his next four by way of 10-1 major decision, forfeit, 8-0 major decision, and a 12-4 decision.
The Yellow Jackets open OAC action on Tuesday November 19 when they travel to Ada, Ohio to take on the Ohio Northern University at 7 p.m.
