No. 7 Wrestling Competes in John Carroll Open

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The No. 7 Nationally-Ranked Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team competed in the John Carroll University Open, inside the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

Freshman 141 pounder Conner DeBoe (Mentor) earned a first place finish after winning his quarterfinal bout with a 21-3 technical fall. In his semifinal, he secured a 9-4 decision before seizing the first-place bout with a 4:06 pin.

Freshman 197-pounder Matthew Werts (Buffalo, N.Y. / Saint Joseph's Collegiate Institute) garnered a second place finish after grabbing his quarterfinal match with a 10-5 decision. In the semifinal, Werts won by way of a 14-8 decision, before falling in his championship bout to a 3-1 sudden victory.

Placing third was junior 165-pounder Ryan Orr (Wadsworth). Orr opened his day with a 12-1 major decision before securing a 2-1 tie-breaker in his quarterfinal match. Orr fell in in his semifinal to a narrow 4-3 decision. The junior claimed his third place spot with a 6-2 decision.

BW will hit the mats next on Friday, February, 28 for the NCAA Division III Central Region Championships, hosted by Adrian (Mich.) College. Matches are set to begin at 3 p.m.
