BW Wrestlers Win Twice at Tri-Meet With Case and Manchester

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team won a pair of dual matches today (Saturday, November 23, 2013) in a tri-match in the fieldhouse of the Lou Higgins Center.

In the opening match, Manchester (Ind.) University defeated Case Western Reserve University, 24-16. BW (2-0 overall) beat visiting Manchester (Ind.) University, 40-6, in its first match and then defeated Cleveland cross-town rival Case, 39-3, in the nightcap.

Against Manchester, BW grabbed a 4-0 lead when sophomore 125-pounder Jesse Gunter (Akron/ Coventry) earned an 11-3 major decision win versus Alan Mock. After MU earned a 4-2 decision to close to within 4-3, BW received seven straight wins and 36 points to take a commanding 40-3 lead. 

First, senior 141-pounder Andrew Taylor (Columbus/ Worthington Kilbourne) pinned Josh Juarez in 3:31 to give the Yellow Jackets six points and make it a 10-3 team score. Sophomore 149-pounder Joey Schmidt and sophomore 157-pounder Garrett Chase (Erie, Pa./ Cathedral Prep) had back-to-back five-point technical falls in 7:00 (15-0) and 5:00 (18-3), respectively, to build the lead to 20-3. Sophomore 165-pounder David Shapiro (Beachwood) beat Manchester's Dylan Lauffer 10-2 for another major decision and four points to push the lead to 24-3. 

With the final score decided, BW added to its lead as sophomore 174-pounder Ben LeBrun (Strongsville) had a 16-6 major decision, freshman 184-pounder Andrew Shackelford (Worthington/ Thomas Worthington) pinned his opponent in 2:20 and sophomore 197-pounder Lane Louvie (Massillon/ Washington) followed suit and bettered Shackelford by 10 seconds with a pin of his own in 2:10. A Manchester win at 285 piunds closed out the match.

Against Case, Gunter gave BW a 4-0 lead with a 13-1 major decision win. It improved his seasonal mark to 4-0 overall. The lead grew to 8-0 when freshman 133-pounder Josh Decatur (Akron/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) won his first collegiate match by a 16-4 major decision. Taylor gave BW its third straight major decision triumph when he won 12-4 at 141 pounds to push the lead to 12-0. He is now 5-5 this season. Case closed the scoring gap to 12-3 with a 5-1 decision at 149 pounds.

The Yellow Jackets took control of the match when Chase improved to 9-0 this season when he won at 157 pounds by a 15-2 decision to make the lead 16-3. Shapiro increased his record this winter to 10-3 and the BW advantage to 22-3 when he pinned his Spartan 165-pound opponent at 1:21. LeBrun continued the onslaught when he won by a 12-4 major decision to improve his seasonal mark to 8-2 and made the score 26-3. 

Shackelford increased the Jacket lead to 29-3 when he improved to 4-3 this season with a 2-0 decision. Louive improved to 2-0 today and 8-2 overall when he won a 12-3 major decision to make the score 33-3. Freshman Tyler Keating (Fairview Park/ Fairview) ended the match with a 39-3 BW win when he won by injury default at 3:33. It was his first career victory and he improved to 1-7 overall.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action next Saturday, December 7 when they travel to Rochester, New York to compete at the annual Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Tournament.  Action begins at 9:30 a.m.
