BW Wrestlers Finish Fourth at Waynesburg (Pa.) Tournament

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team finished fourth of 10 teams at the annual Waynesburg University Tournament in the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

The Yellow Jackets scored 117.5 team points to place fourth behind champion Waynesburg with 175 points.

Placing second were sophomores Jesse Gunter (Akron / Coventry) at 125 pounds and Ben Lebrun (Strongsville) at 174 pounds and freshman 184-pounder Andrew Shackelford (Worthington / Thomas Worthington).

Gunter finished 2-1 at the tourney. He defeated Rob Styron of the The Apprentice School (Va.) by a technical fall with a score of 17-0, then pinned Zach Brawn of West Liberty (W.Va.) University at the 2:23 mark to move into the championship match.  Gunter fell to Paul Bewak of John Hopkins (Md.) University, 3-2, in the title match to place second.  The loss was Gunter's first of the seaso. He is now 11-1 this season and 40-3 in his career.  

Shackelford also finished 2-1 at Waynesburg.  He pinned his first two opponents, Garret Onderko of Alderson-Broaddus (W.Va.) University at 4:50, and Luke Fernandez of Elizabethtown (Pa.) College at 2:12 to advance to the title match. In the championship match, he lost a 2-1 decision to Cameron Fine of Waynesburg. Shackelford moves to 11-5 this season.  

LeBrun also was 2-1.  In his first match, Lebrun defeated Corbin White of Alderson-Broaddus in a major decision 10-0.  He went on to defeat Christian Ostrowski of John Hopkins, 6-1, to move to the finals.  Lebrun fell 7-3 in the championship match to Anthony Bonaventura of Waynesburg. He is now 15-4 this season.

Placing fourth were freshmen 133-pounder Josh Decatur (Akron /Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) and Graham Montague (Independence).  

Decatur beat Brandon Virgillo of Elizabethtown, 12-7, and Alex Powell of Washington and Jefferson (Pa.) College, 3-1.  He fell 5-3 to Logan Strope of W&J to move into the loser's bracket. He bounced back and defeated Dominic Ciaramella of Waynesburg in a major decision, 10-2, and then lost to Powell, 6-4, in the third-fourth place match. Decatur is now 5-7 this winter.

Montague pinned Micheal Bowersox of University of Maryland Baltimore County in 2:20, then fell to Chris Milligan of Waynesburg, 7-2, to move to the loser's bracket.  He went on the pin Luis Godines of the College of Mount Saint Joseph at the 5:56 mark, but was defeated 7-1 by Timothy Keblash of W&J to finish 2-2 today and improve to 10-8 overall.

Placing fifth was freshman 174-pounder Paul Rallis (Ringers, N.J. /Hunterdon Central) with a 2-2 mark. Rallis lost his first match to Anthony Bonventura of Waynesburg in a technical fall with a score of 19-4. In the loser's bracket, he beat Ryan Mayfield of Waynesburg, 5-3, lost to Christian Ostrowski of John Hopkins, 11-4, and ended the day by pinning Brian Haney of W&J at 1:07 to place fifth. Rallis is 5-8 this season.

Placing sixth was freshman 133-pounder Zack Taylor (Brunswick) with a 4-3 record. Taylor opened the day with a loss to Evan Krumheuer of John Hopkins, 4-3. He bounced back in the loser's bracket by winning his next four matches. He defeated Ben Barnhart-Sullivan of Muskingum University in a major decision, 8-0;  beat Sean Kellet of University of Baltimore County, 8-3; beat Joe Wagstaff of West Liberty, 3-2; and defeated Ryan Harter of Elizabethtown, 5-1. In the loser's bracket semifinals, Taylor was pinned by Victor Mowen of W&J at 4:48. In the fifth-sixth place match, he lost a close, 6-5 decision to Filippo Crivelli of W&J.  Taylor is 7-9 overall.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action next Saturday, January 11 when they travel to Manchester, Indiana to compete at the Manchester University Tournament.  Action begins at 10:00 a.m.
