BW Wrestlers Defeat Ohio Northern, 26-15

BEREA, Ohio -- The Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University, 26-15, in dual match competition in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center.

With its victory, the Yellow Jackets improve to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in OAC dual and next compete this Saturday, February 15 when they make up a match at the University of Mount Union at 6:00 p.m.  ONU is 9-8 overall and 1-3 in the OAC. 

Leading the way for the Yellow Jackets were sophomores 157-pounder Garrett Chase (Erie, Pa. /Cathedral Prep) and 165-pounder David Shapiro (Beachwood) who both won by major decisions.

Chase defeated Kyler Deeter in a major decision 14-3. Chase improved his record to 24-5 overall.

Shapiro won by major decision over Keegan Shillito 15-5. Shapiro improved his record to 33-10 overall.

Also for the Brown & Gold, senior 133-pounder Andrew Taylor (Columbus /Worthington Kilbourne) earned an 11-4 decision win versus Cole Cochran. Taylor's win improved his record to 25-14 overall.

Freshman 149-pounder Joshua Decatur (Akron /Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) defeated Cody Harting by a 3-2 decision, improving his record to 13-17 overall.

Freshman 149-pounder Graham Montague (Independence) defeated Kyle Brezovec in sudden victory overtime period one 9-7. The match went to overtime when Brezovec was penalized for an illegal contact to the face as time expired in period three to tie the score at 7-7. Montague improved his record to 19-16 overall.

Freshman 184-pounder Andrew Shackelford (Worthington /Thomas Worthington) won against Dillon Brancheau in a 4-2 decision. Shackelford improved his record to 15-12 overall.

Sophomore 125-pounder Jesse Gunter (Akron/Coventry) won by forfeit

Following its rescheduled match this Saturday at Mount Union, the Yellow Jackets are back in action next Tuesday, February 18 when they end the regular season at OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center at 7:30 p.m.
