BW Wrestlers Finish Second at RIT Tournament

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team finished second of 11 teams at the annual Rochester (N.Y.) Institute of Technology Tournament in the Gordon Field House and Activities Center.

The Yellow Jackets scored 115.5 team points to place second behind champion and cross-town rival John Carroll University with 140 points.

Leading the way for the Brown & Gold was sophomore 125-pounder Jesse Gunter (Akron/Coventry) who placed first in his weight class.  Gunter had a perfect 4-0 record as he won his first two matches with pins coming at 3:42 against Andrew Flanagan of Rochester Institute and at 1:28 against Kevin Ramkishun of SUNY-Oswego.  In the semifinal Gunter won in a 9-3 decision against Brian Amato of Worcester Polytechnical Institute to move into the final where he won in an 8-3 decision against  Sal Corrao of John Carroll.  Gunter improves his season record to 8-0.

In addition to Gunter, sophomores 157-pounder Garrett Chase (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and 174-pounder Ben LeBrun (Strongsville) each placed second in their respective weight classes.  Chase had a 3-1 record as he defeated Jake Vincent of John Carroll University 4-3, beat Michael Baratz of Wesleyan University 4-1, beat Joseph Koshakow of Wesleyan University 6-1.   Chase suffered his first loss of the season and he fell 9-5 in the final to Terner Gott of John Carroll.  

Lebrun had a 3-1 record as he pinned his first two opponents, Chris Ferri of Rochester Institute at 6:02 and NaQuann Cobb of Oneonta State at 1:43.  In the semifinal Lebrun defeated David DiBenedetto of Washington and Jefferson University 4-3, but fell in the final at 3:57.  Lebrun is now 12-3.

Finishing third was freshman 184-pounder Andrew Shackelford (Worthington /Thomas Worthington).  Shackelford had a 4-1 record and started the day off with a pin at 6:05 against Keenan Whalen of Washington and Jefferson.  He won his second match with a 15-0 technical fall against Chris Silakoski of University of Scranton, then lost 7-0 against Todd Gaydosh of John Carroll.  Shackelford bounced back and pinned Conor Driscoll of Case Western Reserve at 2:59, and defeated Tyler Brent Rochester Institute in a 2-1 decision.  Shackelford improved his record to 8-4 on the year.

Placing fourth was senior 141-pounder Andrew Taylor (Columbus /Worthington Kilbourne), sophomore 165-pounder David Shapiro (Beachwood) and freshman 197-pounder Tyler Keating (Fairview Park /Fairview). Taylor had a 4-2 record and started with a pin at 1:20 defeating Ian Evans of University of Scranton. Following that up he defeated Charles Garcia of Oneonta State with a major decision of 10-2, and pinned Jake Sepor of Rochester Institute at 6:43.  Taylor lost 10-4 to Benjamin Mikac of Oneonta State, won with a major decision 11-2 against Anthony Trocchio of John Carroll, and fell to Evans at 1:14.  Taylor improved to 9-7

Shapiro had a 4-2 record and won his first match of the day 10-2 defeating Shawn Flesche of University of Scranton.  He went on to win with a 13-12 decision against Lucas Muntz of Worcester Polytechnical Institute, the fell in the second period of sudden victory 5-1.  Shapiro bounced back winning with a major decision 13-2 against Nick Lees of Case Western Reserve, and won on a medical forfeit moving past Tom McNulty of John Carroll.  He lost in overtime against Shaun Gillen of Oneonta State 8-6. Shapiro is now 14-5

 Keating finished the day with a 2-2 record.  He fell in his first match against Chad Obzud of Oneonta State at 0:42.  Keating defeated Brad Beattie of John Carroll in a 4-2 decision, won on an injury default when facing Joshua Roometua of Wesleyan University, and lost 9-3 against Eric Sullivan Case Western Reserve University.  Keating is 3-7 on the season.  

The Yellow Jackets are back in action next Saturday, December 14 when they travel to Riverdale, New York to face the College of Mount St. Vincent and Hunter (N.Y.) College in a tri-match.  Action begins at 10:00 a.m.
