Taylor Wins Title as BW Wrestlers Finish Fourth at Summa Tournament

BEREA, Ohio – Senior 133-pounder Andrew Taylor (Columbus/Worthington) won an individual title as the Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team finished fourth of nine teams at the 28th Annual John Summa Memorial Tournament, hosted by the Yellow Jackets, in the Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse.

BW scored 83 team points to place fourth.  Waynesburg (Pa.) University was the team champion with 130 points followed by Thiel (Pa.) College in second and the College of Brockport (N.Y.) was third.

On his way to the 133-pound title, Taylor won his first three matches by pin fall.  He first beat Trevor Wood of Thiel at 3:50, then Victor Mowen of Washington & Jefferson (Pa) at 1:39 and James McCabe of Brockport at 7:24 in the semifinals.  Taylor posted an 8-2 decision over Filippo Crivelli of Waynesburg in the championship match.  

Also placing for the Yellow Jackets were sophomore 165-pounder David Shapiro (Beachwood) who went 3-1 on the day.  Shapiro pinned Shawn McGowan of Thiel at the 1:55 mark, then was defeated by Nicholas Carr of Washington & Jefferson by a 5-3 decision.  He bounced back and pinned Jacob Sowers of Ohio Northern University at the 3:21 mark, then defeated Tyler Wilkes of Thiel in the third place match 5-3.

Placing fifth was sophomore 157-pounder Garrett Chase (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and freshman 149-pounder Graham Montague (Independence).  Chase finished with a 3-2 record and Montague finished with a 3-1 record for the tournament.

Chase defeated Shane Foster of Waynesburg, 8-5, then won against Michael Falcon of Brockport in a 9-0 major decision.  He then lost his next two matches as he was defeated by Nathan Ball of Lake Erie College 12-5 and Brandan Collins of Thiel, 6-2.  In the fifth place match, Chase defeated Dan Bruni of Waynesburg University in an 8-2 decision.  

Montague pinned his first two oppenents, Jared Orr of Ohio Northern at the 1:02 mark and Timothy Keblash of Washington & Jefferson at 6:00.  He was then defeated by Luke Lohr of Waynesburg by a 16-4 major decision and Wonsik Kim of Rochester Institute of Technology (N.Y.) 6-4 in overtime.  In the fifth place match, Montague won on a forfeit by Stevan Feucht of Ohio Northern.

In addition to today's Summa Tournament, the Yellow Jackets, 5-2 overall and 0-1 in the OAC in dual matches, is facing Muskingum University in a dual match. The match was originally supposed to take place on Tuesday, February 4, but was postponed due to inclement weather. It was moved to today since Muskingum also competed in the Summa tourney.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, February 11 when they host OAC-rival Ohio Northern University on Seniors' Night in the Ursprung Gym at 7:30 p.m.
