BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's lacrosse team nabbed a tight 9-8 Ohio Athletic Conference victory over crosstown rival John Carroll University inside George Finnie Stadium.

Junior All-OAC attack Brie Martineau (Strongsville) led BW (5-5, 2-1 OAC) with team and game highs of three goals and three assists for six points. Senior two-time All-OAC midfielder Megan Patrick (Ravenna/Kent Roosevelt) added two goals and one assist while junior midfielder Savanna Jaekle (Lockport, N.Y.) also netted a pair of goals.

In the net, sophomore goalkeeper Ashleigh Hildreth (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home) made 12 saves to register her fifth win on the season.

Junior attack Colleen Grombala recorded three goals and one assist in the loss for John Carroll (7-3, 2-1 OAC). Sophomore midfielder/attack Carly Ross was the only other multiple scorer for the Blue Streaks with a pair of goals.

Winning the first few draw controls helped the Yellow Jackets jump on the scoreboard early with goals from senior attack Mackenzie Moran (Carlisle, Pa.), sophomore midfielder Maddie Ray (Cuyahoga Falls/Akron Revere) and Martineau, taking a 3-0 lead. John Carroll finally broke midfield and scored its first goal with 20:39 on the clock before Jaekle answered just 36 seconds later for a 4-1 BW advantage. However, the Blue Streaks closed out the first half on a methodical 3-0 run, tying the game 4-4 at the intermission.

Coming out of the locker room, the Yellow Jackets continued their success on the draw and built back up to a 6-4 lead with goals from Patrick and Martineau. Both of Ross's goals kick started yet another 3-0 run for John Carroll, giving the Blue Streaks their only lead of the game at 7-6 with 18:18 remaining. After almost nine minutes of scoreless action, Patrick netted an unassisted goal to tie the game at 7-7 while senior three-time All-OAC and Academic All-OAC attack Hannah Albrechta (Uniontown/Green) connected with Martineau exactly 2:30 later to regain BW's lead for good. Instead, Jaekle added to the lead with her second goal of the night, putting the Yellow Jackets up by two goals with 6:47 left to play. John Carroll had a comeback in mind, however, as Grombala brought the Blue Streaks back within one thanks to a free-position goal at the 1:27 mark.

John Carroll won the ensuing draw control but turned the ball over, giving BW a chance to run out the clock. Senior defender Sydney Lang had other ideas, though, as she caused a Yellow Jacket turnover with 31 seconds left. The Blue Streaks quickly passed the ball up the field and had a look at the game-tying goal but the final shot was sent wide of the net, sealing the 9-8 win for the Yellow Jackets.

BW is idle until Wednesday, April 10, when the Yellow Jackets head to Ada for an OAC game against Ohio Northern University at 7 p.m. inside Dial-Roberson Stadium.
