Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Capital in OAC Tournament Semifinals

BEXLEY, Ohio – The third-seeded Baldwin Wallace University women's lacrosse team closed out its season as it fell to second-seeded Capital University in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals by a final score of 16-12 inside Bernlohr Stadium.

BW (9-6) closed its season in the semifinals for the third time in the last four years.  Capital (10-5) advances to its second consecutive championship game.

The Yellow Jackets were led by junior All-OAC attack Brie Martineau (Strongsville) as she scored a game-high tying five goals and added two assists for a game-high tying seven points.  Senior All-OAC midfielder Megan Patrick (Ravenna/Kent Roosevelt) netted two goals and added an assist for three points. In net for BW sophomore Ashleigh Hildreth (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home) fell to 9-7 as she allowed 16 goals on 40 shots with 15 saves.  Hildreth ends her sophomore campaign with a school-record 155 saves. 

The Crusaders were led by junior All-OAC midfielder Kathryn Walton as she scored a game-high tying five goals and added two assists for a game-high tying seven points. Senior All-OAC midfielder Makenna Ozenghar tallied four goals and one assist for five points. Sophomore midfielder Brooke DeLara netted three goals and added two assists for five points.

The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring on an unassisted goal by Martineau just a minute seven into the game.  Capital tied things up at 1-1 on a goal from Walton at the 25:54 mark.   BW regained the lead at 2-1 when Patrick found the back of the cage off the assist from Martineau at 25:34. The Crusaders with a 5-0 run to take a 6-2 lead on a pair of goals from Walton and Ozenghar with the last coming at the 15:40 mark.  The Yellow Jackets cut the lead down to 6-3 on Patrick's second goal of the half off the assist from junior midfielder Savanna Jaekle (Lockport, N.Y.) at 14:53.  Capital answered with a 2-0 run to take an 8-3 lead on an unassisted goal from DeLara at the 3:06 mark.  BW closed out the half on a 2-0 run to cut the lead down to 8-5 on goals from senior attack Mackenzie Moran (Carlisle, Pa.) and Martineau with the last coming with seven seconds remaining.

The Yellow Jackets kept the scoring attack going as they scored just 15 seconds into the second half when Martineau picked up the hat trick on the unassisted goal to cut the lead down to 8-6.  The Crusaders went on a 2-0 run to take a 10-6 lead on the score from Ozenghar at the 25:03 mark.   BW cut the lead down to 10-7 on the unassisted goal from junior All-OAC defender Hannah Stein (Medina/Highland) at 24:38. Capital used a 3-0 run to push its lead to 13-7 on the score from Ozenghar at the 20:24 mark.  The Yellow Jackets answered back with three unanswered goals from Albrechta, Martineau and sophomore midfielder Maddie Ray (Cuyahoga Falls/Richfield Revere) with the last coming at 13:53 to cut the lead down to 13-10.  The Crusaders outscored BW by a margin of 3-2 over the remainder of the game to secure the victory.
