Women’s Lacrosse Wins Home Opener Versus NCAA Division II Ursuline

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's lacrosse team won its home opener as it defeated NCAA Division II Ursuline College by a score of 15-6 in a non-conference game on Tressel Field inside George Finnie Stadium.

BW (3-0) was led by sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference attack Hannah Albrechta (Uniontown/Green) as she scored a game-high four goals. In addition, senior All-OAC midfielder Katie Kocher (Rocky River) scored two goals and added three assists for a game-high five points. Defensively, junior defender Taylor Giordanengo (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) caused three turnovers and collected three ground balls.

Ursuline (0-1) was led by senior midfielder Breana Cervantes and sophomore midfielder Cydney Bartlett each scored a team-high two goals. Defensively, sophomore midfielder Haley Mazreku tallied three caused turnovers and three ground balls.  

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early 6-1 lead forcing the Arrows to take a timeout at the 18:40 mark when freshman attack Brie Martineau (Strongsville) netted her third goal of the season.  Kocher led the way with two early goals and senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC midfielder Maddie Russell (Lakewood/Rocky River), sophomore Megan Patrick (Ravenna/Kent Roosevelt) and Albrechta added goals for BW. The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 9-2 when Russell score her second goal of the game at the 10:36 mark. After a nine minute scoreless stretch, BW outscored Ursuline 2-1 in the final two minutes of play to a take a 11-3 into the locker room at halftime.

The Yellow Jackets scored the first three goals of the second half with the last coming when junior All-OAC midfielder Kayla Miller (Hudson) beat the Arrow's goalkeeper with 10:32 left. Martineau and junior attack Caitlin Wheeler (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) also added goals for BW. Ursuline outscored the Yellow Jackets 3-1 in the final 10 minutes to close out the game.  

BW is back in action when it travels to Englewood, Florida for its annual spring trip. The Yellow Jackets square off against Methodist (N.C.) University on Tuesday, March 7 for a non-conference game in Franz Ross Park at 5 p.m.
