Women’s Basketball Stays Unbeaten with Victory Over Washington & Jefferson (Pa.)

WASHINGTON, Pa.  --  The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team stayed unbeaten as it defeated Washington & Jefferson College in a non-conference game by a final score of 65-53 in the Salvitti Family Gymnasium inside the Henry Memorial Center.

BW (4-0) had two players score in double figures led by senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC point guard Riley Schill (Sheffield Village/Elyria Catholic) as she scored a game-high and season-best 22 points and dished out a game-high tying four assists.   Senior All-OAC guard/forward Hannah Fecht (Hilliard/Davidson) chipped in with 11 points.

Washington & Jefferson (3-2), who lost is second straight game to an OAC opponent, had two players score in double digits led by senior forward Allie Seto as she scored a team-best 18 points.  Junior guard Lauren Gilbert added 11 points.

In the first quarter, the Yellow Jackets took an early 7-4 lead on a Schill layup at the 6:21 mark.  BW then used an 8-2 run to push its lead to 15-6 on an a three-pointer from Hughes at 2:51.  Neither team scored the remainder of the opening period.

The Yellow Jackets pushed their lead to 20-9 on a layup by freshman guard Izzy Andrews (Ann Arbor, Mich./Rudolf Steiner) at the 9:10 mark of the second quarter.  After a Presidents basket, BW went on a 4-0 run to push its lead to 24-11 on a layup by sophomore forward Megan Scheibelhut (Avon Lake/Elyria Catholic) at 7:37.  Washington and Jefferson responded with a 4-2 run to cut the lead down to 26-15 when Seto split a pair of free throws at the 6:14 mark.   The Yellow Jackets outscored the Presidents nine to four down the stretch to lead 35-19 at the intermission.  BW got its final points of the opening half on a layup by Riley Schill with 40 seconds remaining.

After a triple from Fecht to open the third quarter, Washington & Jefferson used a 5-0 run to cut the lead down to 38-24 on a layup by Seto at the 7:14 mark.  The Yellow Jackets answered with a 6-0 run to push the lead to 20-points at 44-24 on a layup by sophomore All-OAC Lilly Edwards (Dublin/Coffman) at 5:07. The Presidents closed out the third quarter on a 7-2 run to cut the lead down to 46-31 on a layup by Maddie Gutierrez with 22 seconds left.

BW pushed its lead to 52-36 to open the fourth and final quarter when Scheibelhut knocked down a pair from the charity stripe at the  6:51 mark.  Washington & Jefferson used an 11-5 run to cut the lead down to 57-47 on a pair of free throws from Seto at 3:11.  The Yellow Jackets outscored the Presidents eight to six the remainder of the game to secure the 65-53 victory.

BW is back in action on Monday, December 2 when it opens up OAC action when it hosts Heidelberg University in the Ursprung Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
