Women's Basketball Prevails in Season Opener Against Skidmore (N.Y.), Advances to Chuck Resler Tournament Championship Game

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team won its 2019-20 season opener against Skidmore (N.Y.) College by a final score of 77-63, in its first of two contests in this weekend's Chuck Ressler Tournament, hosted by Rochester (N.Y.) University in Louis A. Alexander Palestra Gymnasium, inside the Goergen Athletic Center.

With BW's (1-0) victory against Skidmore (0-2), the Yellow Jackets will participate in the Chuck Ressler Tournament Championship Game tomorrow evening, and take on tonight's victor between host team Rochester, and Houghton (N.Y.) College.

BW senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC guard Riley Schill (Sheffield Village/Elyria Catholic) scored a team-high 18 points, and also added three assists and four steals. Sophomore Megan Hensel (Upper Sandusky) matched a career-high 13 points off the bench, and also contributed on the glass with four boards. Sophomore All-OAC guard Lilly Edwards (Dublin/Coffman) also poured in 11 points and grabbed four rebounds in the win.

The Thoroughbreds were led by sophomore guard Kate McCarney, who scored a game-high 21 points, dished out four assists, and corralled four rebounds in the defeat.

Skidmore jumped out to an early lead as it went on a 9-2 run to begin the game. The Thoroughbreds maintained their momentum until the end of the first quarter at they secured a five-point lead at the end of the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets started heating up in the second quarter as they erupted to outscore their adversaries 25-13 in the frame, consequently securing a 41-34 lead at halftime.

Despite a 28.6 percent shooting effort and a rather defensive affair in the third quarter, BW managed to retain its lead heading into the final frame. The Yellow Jackets were rolling to begin the fourth quarter, and jumped out to an 8-0 run to start it off. BW's lead had peaked to 20 at the 3:48 mark of the fourth quarter following a Hensel layup. The Yellow Jackets managed to capitalize on Skidmore's seven turnovers in the period to sustain their lead for the remainder of the game.

BW returns to the Louis A. Alexander Palestra Gymnasium tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. in the Chuck Resler Tournament Championship Game, eagerly anticipating its opponent following tonight's 6:00 p.m. matchup between host institution Rochester (N.Y.) and tournament participant Houghton (N.Y.).
