Yellow Jacket Women Hoopsters Fall to No. 8 Ohio Northern

BEREA, OHIO – The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team was defeated by No.8-ranked Ohio Northern University (D3hoops.com national poll) 66-55, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center. 

With the loss, BW fell to 10-8 overall and 5-6 in the OAC and has lost two straight. With its win, Ohio Northern improved to 17-1 overall and 11-0 in the OAC and has won 16 straight games.  The Polar Bears also swept the season series with the Yellow Jackets
 
BW was led by by junior All-OAC guard Jessica Lairson (Louisville) who scored a team-high 15 points and added seven rebounds.   In addition to Lairson for the Yellow Jackets, senior two-time All-OAC guard Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/ Hoover) scored 11 points, and junior forward Lexi Rohrbach (Tiffin/Columbian) scored 10 points.  Ohio Northern was led by senior forward Joanna Snyder who had a double-double scoring and grabbing game-highs 21 points and 11 rebounds respectively.

Ohio Northern got off to an early, 3-0 lead at the 18:48 mark when junior forward Cenzie Yoder made a driving layup and completed the three-point play. Baldwin Wallace then answered with a 12-0 run capped off by freshman guard Alissa Munro (Mansfield/Lexington) at the 14:10 mark to give BW a 12-3 lead. The Polar Bears then ended the run at the 13:53 mark when Snyder made a jumper to cut the Yellow Jacket lead to 12-5.
BW then extended their lead by nine once again when Rohrbach made a layup to make the score 14-5 at the 13:29 mark. Ohio Northern cut back into the Yellow Jacket lead when Yoder split a pair of free throws with 12:32 left in the half to make the score 14-6. BW would extend their lead to 14 with a 9-3 run capped off by a layup by Rohrbach with 8:53 to go in the half to make the score 23-9.
The Polar Bears then made a surge with a 19-0 run capped off by a jumper by Snyder to retake the lead 30-23 at the 2:08 mark in the half. The Yellow Jackets would then cut the Ohio Northern lead to three, ending the half on a 4-0 run when senior guard Amber Boyd (Middleburg Heights/Regina) made a layup with 34 seconds left in the first half to trail 30-27 at halftime.
In the second half, BW senior forward Nancy Coulter (Washington Court House/Miami Trace) started off the half and made a layup at the 18:07 mark to cut into the Ohio Northern lead 30-29. The Polar Bears then answered with a 16-2 run capped off by a free throw by Yoder to complete a three-point play at the 9:30 mark to extend the Ohio Northern lead to 46-31.
The Yellow Jackets cut the Polar Bear lead to single digits on a 13-6 run ending with Carpenter hitting two free throws at the 3:11 mark to make the score 52-44. The Polar Bears would then answer with a 4-0 run to extend their lead again to double digits when Dumbaugh hit a pair of free throws at the 2:18 mark making the score 56-44.
The Yellow Jackets would continue to battle, trading baskets with Ohio Northern in the final two minutes  but came up short as the Polar Bears held on to the victory 66-55.

BW is back in action on Saturday, January 25 when it travels to Westerville to play Otterbein University in the Rike Center at 3:00 p.m.  Fans can listen to that game locally on campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, and via the internet at www.bwyellowjackets.com.  The next home game is on Wednesday, January 30 when BW hosts 23rd-ranked the University of Mount Union in the Ursprung Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
