BW Women Lose at Capital, 53-44

BEXLEY, OHIO – Baldwin Wallace University was led by sophomore guard Audrey Smolik (Strongsville) with nine points and 10 rebounds, but the Yellow Jackets fell to Capital University, 53-44.

With its loss, BW is 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the OAC and has lost two straight. With its win, Capital is 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the OAC and has won three straight.
 
The Yellow Jackets were led by sophomore guard Smolik with nine points and 10 rebounds junior All-OAC forward Jessica Lairson (Louisville) had eight points and a career-high 15 rebounds. In addition to her 13 points, Timmerman had 11 rebounds for Capital, and junior guard Cookie Geroski had 12 rebounds.

BW got off to an early, 2-0 lead at the 19:42 mark when Smolik grabbed an offensive rebound and scored.  The game was then tied at 2-2 and 5-5 before BW junior guard Megan Frisina(Corry, Pa./ Corry Area) made a three-pointer at 15:28 for an 8-5 lead. An 9-0 Capital run gave the Crusaders the lead at 14-8 at 9:49 when sophomore guard Shelby Sheets drove the baseline and scored.

BW went on an 8-0 run to regain the lead at 16-14 when Lairson made a three-pointer. Capital came right back with three baskets by Timmerman with the last at 3:36 for a 20-16 lead. A Smolik basket ended the 6-0 run at 3:15 and Capital led, 20-18.
 
After the teams traded baskets, Lairson made two foul shots to tie it at 22-22 with 35.7 seconds left and then made a steal and drove the length of the floor to score with four seconds left before the intermission and give BW a 24-22 advantage at the break.

Capital tied the game at 24-24 when Caton scored, was fouled, but missed her free throw for a chance at the lead at 19:23. After four lead changes and three ties, the Crusaders grabbed a 34-29 lead at 11:02 on the strength of a 5-0 run that was capped when freshman guard Simonne Gage made a steal and went coast-to-coast to score.

After two Gage foul shots made it 36-29 at 10:32, BW senior 2-time All-OAC forward Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/ Hoover) made a layup at 10:21 to make it 36-31.  After a Lairson foul shot at 9:17 cut the deficit to 36-32, Capital outscored BW 11-5 to build its first 10-point lead at 47-37 when Timmerman made one of two foul shots.

Capital gained a 49-38 lead at 3:08 when Caton made a foul shot, but BW countered with a foul shot by senior guard Rachel Rossman (Olmsted Falls) and a layup by senior guard Amber Boyd(Middleburg Heights/ Regina) at 2:31 to reduce the deficit to 49-41.

A triple by Rossman at 1:40 made it 49-44 and BW had a chance to make it a one possession game, but Lairson missed two foul shots at 1:06. It hurt even more when Capital junior guard made one of two charity tosses with 46.4 seconds left to extend the lead to 50-44. That was as close as BW would get to Capital.

BW is now idle during the Fall Semester final exams and next plays when it opens its home schedule on Saturday, December 15 versus Wilmington College in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center at 3:00 p.m.
