BW Women Beat Marietta for Second Straight Win

MARIETTA, OHIO – Senior two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference standout Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/ Hoover) scored 15 points as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College, 66-38, today (Saturday, January 5, 2013) in the Ban Johnson Arena. The win was BW's second straight.
 
With its win, BW is 7-6 overall and 2-4 in the OAC and next plays on Wednesday, January 9 when it travels to University Heights to play OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center at 7:300 p.m. The victory also increased BW's series advantage to 44-14 all-time, including 35 Yellow Jacket wins in the last 36 meetings. With its loss, Marietta is 6-7 overall and 1-5 in the OAC.  The Pioneers are coached by former BW standout Stacia Shrider.
 
In addition to Carpenter for BW, sophomore guard Shari Mangas (Leipsic) scored 10 points.  Sophomore forward Candice Alexander led the Pioneers with 15 points.
 
BW got off to an early, 5-0 lead at the 16:09 mark when Audrey Smolik (Strongsville) made a jump shot. After BW took a 7-2 lead, the Pioneers scored six straight points to gain an 8-7 advantage at 12:21 when sophomore forward Sierra Sigman made a layup. The lead grew to 10-7 before BW went on a 5-0 run to retake the lead at 12-10 at 10:41 when junior All-OAC guard Jessica Lairson (Louisville) made a three-pointer.

The Yellow Jacket run continued and ended a 14-0 when BW took a 21-10 lead with 3:38 left before halftime when Mangas made a triple. Marietta ended the run at 3:04 and a scoring drought of 8:22 when Alexander made a layup to make it 21-12. Marietta outscored BW 8-6 the remainder of the stanza and the Yellow Jackets led, 27-20, at the intermission.

BW scored the first seven points of the second half to build a 14-point bulge at 34-20 at 17:55 when Carpenter made a layup. Marietta's Alexander ended the run with a basket at 17:24, but Carpenter answered right back with a three-pointer at 17:10 to make it 37-22.  Freshman forward Sam Hamar (Galion) made a layup at 15:07 for a 39-22 advantage.

After BW gained its second 17-point lead at 41-24 on another Hamar jumper at 14:03, Marietta scored four straight points to cut the deficit to 41-28 with 13:29 left when Alexander made a jumper. Undaunted, BW went on a 10-1 run to build its lead to 51-29 with 10:20 left when Smolik made a jumper.

The largest Yellow Jacket lead of the game was 28 points at 66-38 with 37 seconds left when senior guard Megan Frisina (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area) made one of two foul shots.

Following its game at JCU, the BW women play an OAC doubleheader at Muskingum University next Saturday, Jan. 12. The women tipoff at 2:00 p.m. and the men play at 4:00 p.m. On Saturday, January 19, the BW men and women will host an OAC doubleheader that will be televised by SportsTime Ohio. The women's game is at 2:00 p.m. and is the Fourth Annual "Take a Kid to the Game" Day.  The men tipoff at 4:00 p.m.

With her six assists, Rossman now has 312 career assists and ranks seventh all-time in BW school history.  She needs two more to surpass Shannon Anderson (1994-98), who had 313 in her career, and she needs four more to pass BW Hall of Famer Debbie Crider (1982-87), who had 315 career assists, and move into fifth place. In addition and with her victory today, 23-year BW Head Coach Cheri Harrer's record improved to 457-169. Harrer is the second winningest women's coach in OAC history.
