BW Beats Ohio Wesleyan, 63-47, in Season Opener

FRANKLIN, INDIANA  – Freshman guard Alissa Munro (Mansfield/ Lexington) scored 12 points as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated traditional rival Ohio Wesleyan University, 63-47, tonight (Friday, November 16, 2012) in the first round of the Franklin College of Indiana Invitational at the Spurlock Center Gym. BW advances to the championship game versus Franklin College of Indiana tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.

With the victory, the Yellow Jackets are now 1-0 overall.  With the loss, Ohio Wesleyan is now  0-1 and plays Spalding (Ky.) College in the 1:00 p.m. consolation game.

In addition to Munro for BW, junior forward Jessica Lairson (Louisville) contributed 10 points with seven rebounds and three assists. Junior center Natalia Simovic (Seven Hills/ Normandy) had eight points and five rebounds. Caroline Welker led OWU with 12 points.

The Battling Bishops jumped out an early, 3-0 lead at the 18:01 mark. The Yellow Jackets would score their first points of the 2012-13 season with a three from Lairson at 17:37.  BW would take a 9-7 lead at the 12:45 mark when Lairson made a layup off the assist from freshman guard Allyson Helleis (Rocky River).
 
The Yellow Jackets would then go on a 5-0 run to increase their lead to 14-7 on a three pointer by Munro with 11:21 remaining in the first half. The trey would be the first point of Munro's collegiate career.

Ohio Wesleyan outscored BW 16-14 over the remainder of the half to trail 28-23 at the intermission.

The Yellow Jackets opened the second half on a 7-0 run with scores from Lairson, junior center Lexi Rohrbach (Tiffin/Columbian), senior guard Rachel Rossman (Olmsted Falls) and freshman She'Kiera Brooks (Stow/Woodridge). The Battling Bishops would follow with a 6-0 run of their own to cut the lead to six points, 35-29, at the 15:11 mark but would not get any closer.

BW would outscore Ohio Wesleyan 28-18 over the remainder of the game to secure the 16-point victory.

Following its game tomorrow versus Franklin, BW is back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 20 when it travels cross-town to face nonleague rival Case Western Reserve University at 7:30 p.m. The Yellow Jackets play their first six games away from home and open the home schedule with an Ohio Athletic Conference game on Saturday, December 15 versus Wilmington College in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center at 3:00 p.m.
