Smolik's Career Night Leads BW in Upset of #19 Mt. Union

BEREA, OHIO -- Sophomore guard Audrey Smolik (Strongsville) scored a game and career-high 20 points as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team upset No.19-ranked (d3hoops.com Division III national poll) University of Mount Union, 74-71, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center.

With its win, BW improves to 11-9 overall and 6-7 in the OAC. With its loss, Mount Union falls to 16-4 overall and 10-3 in the OAC as the two teams split the season series.
 
In addition to Smolik for BW, junior forward Jessica Lairson (Louisville) scored 16 points and freshman forward Alissa Munro (Mansfield/Lexington) scored 10 points. Mount Union was led by senior guard Rosa LaMattina who scored a team-high 19 points.

The Yellow Jackets got off to an early 6-0 lead at the 18:30 mark when Smolik hit a breakaway jumper. The Purple Raiders got on the board when LaMattina hit a three pointer at 17:58 to cut the BW lead 6-3.

Baldwin Wallace would go on an 11-5 run to extend its lead to 17-8 when Lairson hit a pair of free throws at 12:14. Mount Union would then regain the lead by answering with a 12-0 run capped off on a layup by senior guard Maggie Miller at 9:03 making the score 20-17.
BW would then retake the lead at 24-22 on a 7-2 run when freshman guard Allyson Helleis (Rocky River) nailed a trey at 6:21. The Purple Raiders would then tie the game up at 24-24 when sophomore center Aly Daniel made a layup with 5:04 remaining in the half.
The Yellow Jackets would retake the lead ending the half on a 14-5 run ending with a three pointer by Munro at 1:14 giving them a 38-29 halftime lead.

In the second half, Lairson extended the BW lead 40-29 when she hit a jumper at the 19:43 mark. Mount Union would then answer when Daniel made a driving layup at 19:23 cutting into BW's lead at 40-31.
The Yellow Jackets would then extend their lead to 50-34 with a 10-3 run capped off by a layup by junior forward Lexi Rohrbach (Tiffin/Columbian) at the 15:13 mark. Mount Union would then cut back into the BW lead with an 8-0 run capped on a layup from freshman guard Annie Bova at 13:56.
Baldwin Wallace would then regain a 10-point advantage when Lairson made a layup at 13:25 making the score 52-42. The Purple Raiders would narrow BW's lead to 56-53 with a 14-4 run capped off by a jumper by senior forward Marybeth Leitch with 10:08 remaining.
Then BW would extend their lead again with a 4-0 run when Smolik hit a jumper at 8:56 making the score 60-53. Mount Union would cut BW's lead to three once again with a 5-2 run at 6:41 when freshman center Jessie Baldridge made a layup making the score 62-59.
The Yellow Jackets would then extend their lead again with a 6-2 run at the 2:25 mark when senior center Nancy Coulter (Washington Court House/Miami Trace) made a pair of free throws to make the score 68-61. The Purple Raiders would then go on a 7-0 run at 1:05 when Bova made two free throws to tie the game up at 68-68.
BW would then retake the lead with 48 seconds remaining when Lairson hit a pair of free throws to make it 70-68. The Yellow Jackets would then hold on and outscore the Purple Raiders 4-3 over the final seconds of the game to secure the 74-71 victory.

BW is back in action on Saturday, February 2 when it travels to Wilmington, Ohio to play the Wilmington College Quakers in the Fred Razik Arena at 3:00 p.m. Next week, the Yellow Jackets host both OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday, Feb. 9, they host Marietta College at 3:00 p.m.  Both games are played in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center..
