BEREA, OHIO -- Sophomore guard Audrey Smolik (Strongsville) scored a game and career-high 20 points as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team upset No.19-ranked (d3hoops.com Division III national poll) University of Mount Union, 74-71, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center.
With its win, BW improves to 11-9 overall and 6-7 in the OAC. With its loss, Mount Union falls to 16-4 overall and 10-3 in the OAC as the two teams split the season series.
In addition to Smolik for BW, junior forward Jessica Lairson (Louisville) scored 16 points and freshman forward Alissa Munro (Mansfield/Lexington) scored 10 points. Mount Union was led by senior guard Rosa LaMattina who scored a team-high 19 points.
The Yellow Jackets got off to an early 6-0 lead at the 18:30 mark when Smolik hit a breakaway jumper. The Purple Raiders got on the board when LaMattina hit a three pointer at 17:58 to cut the BW lead 6-3.
In the second half, Lairson extended the BW lead 40-29 when she hit a jumper at the 19:43 mark. Mount Union would then answer when Daniel made a driving layup at 19:23 cutting into BW's lead at 40-31.
BW is back in action on Saturday, February 2 when it travels to Wilmington, Ohio to play the Wilmington College Quakers in the Fred Razik Arena at 3:00 p.m. Next week, the Yellow Jackets host both OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday, Feb. 9, they host Marietta College at 3:00 p.m. Both games are played in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center..
