BW Women's Basketball Falls to Case in Thriller, 65-63

CLEVELAND, OHIO – Junior forward Lexi Rohrbach (Tiffin/ Columbian) scored a career-high 14 points but the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team lost a nail-biter to cross-town host Case Western Reserve University, 65-63, in a non-conference game inside Horsbaugh Gymnasium.

With its loss, BW lost its first game of the season and is now 2-1 overall and next plays on Monday, November 26 at traditional rival Wittenberg University at 7:30 p.m.  With its victory, Case, which won the Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) Tournament last weekend, is now 3-0 overall.

In addition to Rohrbach for the Yellow Jackets, freshman guard Alissa Munro (Mansfield/Lexington) scored a career-high tying 14 points. and junior guard Jessica Lairson (Louisville) grabbed five rebounds to go with six points.  The Spartans were led by senior Evy Iacano with a game-high 22 points.

BW got off to an early 11-5 lead at the 15:44 mark with three-point baskets from Munro and senior guard Megan Frisina (Corry, PA/ Corry Area).  Case would then go on a 20-7 run to take the lead at 25-18 at the 9:40 mark when Iacano nailed a three-point field goal from.  With 5:19 left to play in the first half, Case led by ten points at 37-27, when Erica Iafelice hit the Spartans fourth three-pointer of the game.

The Yellow Jackets would close out the first half on a 23-16 run to tie the game at 41-41 when Lairson drove down the baseline and put in a layup as time expired.

BW would open up the second half on a 5-2 run to take a 46-43 lead on a layup from senior forward Nancy Coulter (Washington Court House/Miami Trace).  Following the early run by the Yellow Jackets, the Spartans went on a 14-5 run of their own to take a 57-51 lead at the 7:25 mark.  

BW would follow with five unanswered points on a basket from Lairson and trey from Rossman to cut the Case lead to one at 57-56 with 5:00 minutes left in the game.

BW would turn a three-point deficit into a three-point advantage at 63-60 with 2:02 remaining as Munro connected on a pair of three-point shots in a span of 38 seconds.  In a game that went back and forth in the last several minutes, the Spartans came back with their own 4-0 run to take the lead by one at 64-63 with 26 seconds left in the game.  

The Spartans would split a pair of free throws  with just three seconds left in the game at 65-63.  The Yellow Jackets missed a game-winning three at the buzzer.

Following its game at Wittenberg, BW is back in action on Wednesday, December 5 when it opens Ohio Athletic Conference play at Ohio Northern University at 7:30 p.m. The Yellow Jackets play their first six games away from home and open the home schedule on Saturday, December 15 versus Wilmington College in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center at 3:00 p.m.
