Softball Sweeps Occidental (Calif.) in Season Opener

OCCIDENTAL, Calif. – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team opened the season and it spring break trip as it swept a non-conference doubleheader with Occidental College on the Bell Softball Field.

In game one, BW (2-0) scored two runs on six hits as it plated one run in the second and one in the fifth. Occidental (6-0) was held scoreless on one hit.

At the Plate

  • Sophomore first baseman Gillian Ryser (Hubbard) and freshman third baseman Mia Maddamma (North Royalton) each went 2-for-3
  • Ryser added a stolen base 

In the Circle

  • Junior right hander Marisa Hall (Paris/East Canton) picked up the win as she did not allow a run on one hit with nine strikeouts and one walk.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored 10 runs on 13 hits in five innings as they erupted for all 10 runs in the first inning.  The Tigers were held scoreless and hitless.

At the Plate

  • Sophomore left fielder Macaira Fox (Massillon/Tuslaw) went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, run batted-in (RBI) and a stolen base
  • Senior Academic All-OAC center fielder Lexy Coggins (Vermillion/Firelands) went 2-for-2 with a double, run scored, two RBIs and a stolen base
  • Sophomore right handed pitcher Maddie Lester (Boardman) went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs
  • Maddamma went 2-for-2 with a run scored and RBI
  • Five other BW hitters recorded a base knock

In the Circle

  • Lester won her Yellow Jacket debut as she pitched a no-hitter with nine strikeouts and four walks

BW is back in action on Monday, March 5 when it travels to Thousand Oaks, California for a non-conference doubleheader against California Lutheran University on Hutton Field and 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.
