Softball Splits Doubleheader with Pomona-Pitzer (Calif.)

CLAREMONT, Calif. – On its fifth day of its West Coast swing, the Baldwin Wallace University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Pomona-Pitzer College on Wig Beach Field.

In game one, BW (6-4) scored four runs on five hits as it plated all four runs in the fourth on the first career grand slam for sophomore designated player/pitcher Maddie Lester (Boardman).  Pomona-Pitzer (2-7) scored one run on five hits as it pushed its lone run across the plate in the seventh

At the Plate

  • Sophomore first baseman Gillian Ryser (Hubbard) went 2-for-3
  • Sophomore left fielder Macaira Fox (Massillon/Tuslaw) went 1-for-2 with a run scored, walk and stolen base
  • Lester went 1-for-4 with a grand slam, one runs scored and a career-high four runs batted-in (RBIs)
  • Freshman Mia Maddamma (North Royalton) went 1-for-4

In the Circle

  • Junior right hander Marisa Hall (Paris/East Canton) picked up her third win as she allowed one run on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored one run on eight hits as it plated its lone run in the second inning. The Sagehens scored nine runs on 15 hits as they pushed one run across the plate in the first, three in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth.

At the Plate

  • Sophomore designated player Sam Smearman (Middleburg Heights/Berea-Midpark) went 2-for-2
  • Maddamma went 2-for-3
  • Sophomore shortstop Lucia Wolford (McDonald), Fox, Lester and Ryser all had a base knock

In the Circle

  • Lester suffered her first loss of the season as she allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits with a walk in 1.2 innings pitched
  • Hall pitched a third of an inning and did not allow a run or hit
  • Freshman right hander Shelby Morris (Centerburg) allowed three runs on seven hits in two innings pitched
  • Junior right Taryn Welty (Medina/Wooster) allowed two runs on two hits with a walk in two-thirds of an inning pitched

BW closes out its spring break trip on Saturday, March 9 when it travels to La Verne, California with a pair of non-conference games against the University of La Verne and No. 25 nationally ranked Chapman (Calif.) inside the La Verne Softball Stadium at 2 and 4 p.m.
