Softball Splits Doubleheader with California Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – On day two of its spring break trip, the Baldwin Wallace University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with California Lutheran University on Hatton Field.

In game one, BW (3-1) was held scoreless on five hits.   Cal Lutheran (3-5) scored three runs on five hits as it pushed three of its runs across the plate in first inning.

At the Plate

  • Sophomore shortstop Lucia Wolford (McDonald) went 2-for-3 with a double
  • Junior Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference center fielder Lexy Coggins (Vermillion/Firelands) went 1-for-3 with a stolen base
  • Sophomore right fielder Steph Mraz (Strongsville) went 1-fpr-3 with a double
  • Freshman third baseman Mia Maddamma (North Royalton) went 1-for-2 with a walk

In the Circle

  • Freshman right hander Shelby Morris (Centerburg) got the start and allowed three runs on two hits with a walk in a third of an inning
  • Sophomore righty Maddie Lester (Boardman) pitched the final 5.2 innings and did not allow a run on three hits with six strikeouts

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored eight runs on nine hits as they plated two runs in the first inning on the 2-run homerun from Lester, two in the second, two in the third and two in the sixth.   The Regals scored four runs on seven hits as they pushed one run across the plate in the first, one in the third and two in the fourth.

At the Plate

  • Lester went 2-for-2 with a homer, which was the first of her career at BW, double, two runs scored, four runs batted-in (RBIs) and two walks
  • Senior All-OAC catcher Bridie Bricker (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark) went 2-for-2 with a sacrifice
  • Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC second baseman Emily Mau (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) went 1-for-3 with a run scored, RBI and a stolen base
  • Sophomore left fielder Macaira Fox (Massillon/Tuslaw) went 1-for-3 with a run scored and walk
  • Sophomore first baseman Gillian Ryser (Hubbard) went 1-for-4 with two runs scored
  • Freshman catcher Mia Strizak (Middleburg Heights/Berea-Midpark) went 1-for-1, which was her first collegiate hit
  • Mraz went 1-for-4 with a run scored

In the Circle

  • Junior right hander Taryn Welty (Medina/Wooster) got the start and the victory as she allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits with one walk in four innings pitched
  • Junior righty Marisa Hall (Paris/East Canton) picked up her second career save as she pitched the final three innings and did not allow a run on three hits with three strikeouts

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, March 5 when they travel to Whittier, California for a non-conference doubleheader against Whittier College on Charles and Marie Palmer Softball Field at 3 and 5 p.m.
