Softball Wins OAC Tournament Championship, Defeats Ohio Northern

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team won the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Championship as it defeated Ohio Northern University by a final score of 10-7 at the Alliance High School Softball Field.

BW (25-14), who was the third seed, won its first OAC Tournament Champion since the 2011 season.   The Yellow Jackets earn the OAC's automatic bid into the NCAA Division Tournament.   Ohio Northern (24-20), who was the fourth seed, ends its season.

Junior right handed pitcher Marisa Hall (Paris/East Canton), sophomore designated player/pitcher Maddie Lester (Boardman), sophomore first baseman Gillian Ryser (Hubbard) and sophomore shortstop Lucia Wolford (McDonald) was named to the OAC All-Tournament. 

BW scored 10 runs on 10 hits as it plated six runs in the first inning off the first career homerun by sophomore shortstop Lucia Wolford (McDonald) and a three-run blast by sophomore right fielder Steph Mraz (Strongsville) and four in the third.  The Polar Bears scored seven runs on 13 hits as it pushed one run across the plate in the third, two in the fifth and four in the sixth

At the Plate

  • Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC second baseman Emily Mau (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base
  • Wolford went 2-for-3 with a homerun, one run scored and a career-high tying five runs batted-in (RBIs)
  • Mraz went 2-for-3 with a homer, two runs scored and career-high tying three RBIs
  • Freshman third baseman Mia Maddamma (North Royalton) went 2-for-2 with a run scored, RBI and walk

In the Circle

  • Hall won her 13th game of the season as she allowed seven runs on 11 hits with six strikeouts and two walks in 6.2 innings pitched
  • Lester did not allow a run on two hits with one walk in a third of an inning
