BW Men Win at Muskingum, 74-64, for Eight Straight Triumph

NEW CONCORD, OHIO – Senior two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick) scored 26 points as the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team won its eighth straight game as it defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Muskingum University, 74-64, today (Saturday, January 12, 2013) in the John Glenn Gymnasium. 
 
With its victory, BW improved to 11-4 overall and 6-2 in the OAC. With its loss, Muskingum dropped to 1-14 overall and 0-8 in the OAC and lost for the third straight time. Muskingum leads the all-time series, 53-45, but the Yellow Jackets have won the last three meetings.
 
In addition to Payne for BW, junior center Tyler Ferrell (Brunswick) scored 17 points and junior guard Grant Fairhurst (Ashland/ Senior) had 11 off the bench.  With his 26 points today, Payne now has 981 career points and needs 19 more to become the 37th member of the BW 1000-Point Club.  Muskingum was led by freshman guard Christian Keller with 25 points and junior guard Dave Brown had 15.
 
The key to the win for BW outscoring Muskingum 31-11 at the foul line, making 31-of-38 foul shots, including 21-of-23 by Payne and Ferrell and outrebounding the Muskies, 39-31.
 
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early, 7-2 lead at the 17:44 mark when Ferrell (Brunswick) made two foul shots. Muskingum then went on a 10-3 run to take a 12-10 lead at 13:38 when Keller made a layup, was foul and converted for an old-fashioned three-point play.
 
After three lead changes and a tie, Muskingum received a three-pointer from Brown at 9:24 for an 18-15 lead. BW went on a 7-0 run to lead 22-18 with 5:56 left when senior guard and defensive specialistBrandon Schmidt (Wellington) canned a three-pointer.
 
Undaunted, Muskingum went on a 7-0 run of its own to lead 25-22 with 4:42 left in the first stanza when sophomore forward Cody Seiler made a layup. BW outscored the Fighting Muskies 6-2 to retake the lead at 28-27 with 1:55 left when sophomore guard Jaron Crowe (Mentor) made two foul shots.
 
The Muskies retook the lead at 29-28 on a Keller runner in the lane with 1:07 left, but Crowe gave BW a 31-29 halftime advantage when he canned a triple with 15.1 seconds left.
 
In the second half, BW scored the first four points to build its largest lead of six points at 35-29 at 18:16 when Payne made a layup.  A three-pointer Fairhurst at 17:37 extended BW's lead to 38-29 before a foul shot by Muskie sophomore guard Logan Kimble at 17:06 ended the 7-0 run and made the score 38-30.
 
The Fighting Muskies then outscored the Yellow Jackets 17-9 to tie the score at 47-47 with 8:29 left. The game was tied again at 49-49 with 7:34 remaining when Ferrell made two foul shots at 7:14 and Payne a layup at 6:46 for a 53-49 lead. Brown brought the Muskies closer at 53-51 with a floater in the lane at 6:19.
 
Payne then gave BW an 8-point lead at 59-51 with 4:47 left with a layup and four foul shots, and Fairhurst extended it to a game-high 11 points at 62-51 at 4:14 when he nailed his second trey on the contest.
 
The lead grew to 13 at 64-51 when Payne made a layup at 3:34 before Keller's two foul shots ended the 15-0 run at 3:15. But Muskingum cut the lead to nine points on two separate occasions with the last at 69-60 at 1:18 when Brown canned a jumper. BW got two straight layups from Fairhurst with the last at 47 seconds to restore the lead to 13 at 73-70.
 
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, January 16 when they travel to Tiffin, Ohio to play OAC rival Heidelberg University in the Seiberling Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, January 19, the BW men and women will host an OAC doubleheader that will be televised by SportsTime Ohio. The women's game is at 2:00 p.m. and is the Fourth Annual "Take a Kid to the Game" Day.  The men tipoff at 4:00 p.m.
