BW Men Win at JCU for 14th Victory in Last 15 Games

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OHIO – Junior two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick) scored 19 points as the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival John Carroll University, 70-54, in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center. The victory was BW's fourth straight and 14th in its last 15 contests.

With its victory, BW improved to 17-5 overall and 12-3 in the OAC and beat the Blue Streaks for the third straight time to increase its all-time series advantage to 59-52. With its loss, JCU dropped to 10-11 overall and 7-8 in the OAC and lost for the second straight time.
 
In addition to Payne for BW, junior All-OAC guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/Holy Name) had 10 points. JCU was led by sophomore forward David Henrickson's 14 points and senior forward Kyle Hubbard had 12 markers.
 
With his 19 points today, Payne now has 1,114 career points and moved into 23rd place on the all-time scoring list. Tonight, he surpassed current Brunswick High School Head Coach Joe Mackey (1991-95), who had 1,095 points; current BW Assistant Coach Jon Carroll (1999-2003), who had 1,098 points; and BW Hall of Famers Wilbur Wilson (1978-82), who had 1,108 points, and Jerry Suess (1952-55), who had 1,111 points. Next up is No.22 Dick Scott (1964-68), who had 1,116 points, and No.21 Keith Aufmuth (2002-06), who had 1,135 points.
 
The JCU jumped out to an early, 3-0 lead at the 18:36 mark when senior forward Kyle Hubbard made one of two foul shots. BW came back with a 5-0 run to take a 5-3 lead at 17:27 when junior All-OAC guard Krakowiak made an off-balance jumper.
 
After a JCU foul shot made it 5-4, BW ran off six straight points to lead 11-4 at 14:56 when Payne made two foul shots. The Yellow Jackets increased their advantage to 24-10 at 9:21 when Krakowiak received a beautiful pass from senior CAPITAL ONE Academic All-District 7 guard Ben Umbel (Poland/ Seminary).

The lead ballooned to a first period high of 22 points at 38-16 at 2:40 when sophomore forward Matt Dennis (Spring Hill, Fla./ Nature Coast Technical) made a layup, was fouled but missed his free throw.  BW went into the locker room with a 40-20 halftime lead.

The lead continued to grow and reached 50-25 at 15:42 left when senior two-time Academic All-OAC forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Heights/ Walsh Jesuit) made a jump shot.  JCU went on a 14-6 run to cut the deficit to 56-39 with 10:20 left when Hubbard made two foul shots.

JCU got as close as 59-45 with 6:51 left, but a Payne basket at 6:19 and a foul shot by Jaron Crowe (Mentor) at 6:01 pushed the lead to 62-45.  An 8-5 run then pushed the lead to 20 with 2:47 left at 70-50 when Crowe made a driving layup.

The Yellow Jacket men are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 9 when they travel to Marietta, Ohio to play Marietta College in the Ban Johnson Arena at 3:00 p.m.
