Yellow Jacket Men's Basketball Knocks Off First Place Marietta

BEREA, OHIO – The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team exploded for a season-high tying 94 points as it knocked off first-place Marietta College, 94-71, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center.  

With the win, the Yellow Jackets won their sixth straight game and improved to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the OAC. With the loss, the Pioneers lost their first conference game and fell to 9-4 overall and 5-1 in the OAC.

BW had three players score in double figures, led by senior forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Heights/Walsh Jesuit) with a season-high 18 points. Ameen went 8-of-10 from the field, including 2-of-3 from three-point land and grabbed seven rebounds.  Junior All-OAC forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick) added 17 points and junior All-OAC guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/Holy Name) contributed 15. Senior Academic All-OAC guard Ben Umbel (Poland/Seminary) grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and had five assists, two blocked shots and a pair of steals.  Marietta was led by senior forward Jason Humphrey with 16 points.

The Yellow Jackets gained a 2-0 leads even before the opening tip due to an administrative technical fall against the Pioneers for dunking prior to the game and during warm ups. Krakowiak hit both free throws from the charity stripe.  After a missed layup by Marietta to start the game, BW added to its lead at 4-0 when junior forward Tyler Ferrell (Brunswick) hit a jumper at 19:34.

The Pioneers responded with a 4-0 run to tie the game at 4-4 on a jumper by senior forward J.J. Martin with 17:35 remaining.   The Yellow Jackets quickly responded with a 6-0 run to take a 10-4 advantage as sophomore guard Jaron Crowe (Mentor) and Umbel each buried a three-pointer with the last coming at the 16:56 mark.
After a three-point play by Marietta, BW would go on 6-0 run to push its lead to 16-7 with 14:26 left as Ameen accounted for five of the points.   The Pioneers outscored the Yellow Jackets 12-4 to cut the lead down to one-point at 20-19 when senior guard Tyler Worstell knocked down a jumper at 9:55.
BW responded with a 15-5 run to push its lead to 35-24 when junior guard Grant Fairhurst (Ashland) and junior forward Skyler Simpson (Centerburg) knocked down back-to-back treys and Krakowiak hit a jumper with 6:25 remaining.  
Each team scored 11 points over the remainder of the half with the Yellow Jackets holding a 46-35 lead at the intermission.
Both teams opened the second half firing on all cylinders and after three minutes of play each team scored on all of their offensive opportunities and the score was 57-44 at the 16:34 mark.
After a bucket by Marietta, BW went on a 6-0 run to push its lead to 63-46 on baskets from Umbel and Krakowiak and Payne with 13:50 remaining.  The Pioneers responded with a 5-0 run to cut the lead down to 63-51 when sophomore forward Brennan McKean hit a triple at the 12:57 mark.
After each team exchanged baskets, the Yellow Jackets went on an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 75-56 with 9:53 remaining.   Fairhurst accounted for five and Simpson knocked down his third trey of the game.
BW would outscore Marietta 19-14 over the remainder of the game and pushed its lead to as many as 24 points at 94-70 when senior forward Sean Rothermel (Delaware/Hayes) scored on a layup with 22 seconds remaining. .
