BW Men Beat Heidelberg, 75-65, for Ninth Straight Win

TIFFIN, OHIO – Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick) scored a game-high 24 points and surpassed the 1,000-point plateau as the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team won its ninth straight game as it defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg University, 75-65, tonight (Wednesday, January 16, 2013) in the Seiberling Gymnasium.   

With its victory, BW improved to 12-4 overall and 7-2 in the OAC. With its loss, Heidelberg dropped to 9-7overall and 4-5 in the OAC. BW leads the all-time series, 67-44, and has beaten the Student Princes in each of the last three meetings.
 
In addition to Payne for BW, junior All-OAC guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/ Parma Heights Holy Name) had 18 and senior Academic All-OAC forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Heights/ Walsh Jesuit) had 10 points.  With his 24 points today, Payne now 1,016 career points to become the 37th member of the BW 1000-Point Club.  Heidelberg was led by senior center Nate Davis' 21 points, senior guard Dane Givner had 14 and junior guard Mike Petrie had 11.
 
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early, 2-0 lead before the game even began as Krakowiak made two foul shots due to a technical foul on Heidelberg for a pregame scorebook violation involving a player who recently transferred in from Division II Tiffin University.
 
Once the game resumed, Heidelberg tied it at 2-2 and it was tied six times, all the way to 12-12 when Ameen made one of two foul shots at the 13:08 mark. Then, after Ameen canned a three-pointer at 12:36 to give BW a 15-12 lead, the Student Princes outscored the Jackets 5-2 to tie it at 17-17 with 7:49 left when Givner made a jump shot.
 
Heidelberg continued its run by scoring the next six points to take a 23-17 advantage at 6:11 when Davis made a driving layup. The run was 11-2. Unduanted, BW came back with an 11-2 run of its own to retake the lead at 28-25 with 2:00 left before the intermission when sophomore point guard Jaron Crowe (Mentor) made a driving layup. During the run, Payne scored his 1,000th point on a layup at 3:04 to give BW a 26-25 lead.
 
There was no scoring in the final two minutes and BW led 28-25 at haftime.
 
In the second half, BW gained a 35-27 lead at the 18:06 mark when junior forward Tyler Ferrell (Brunswick) made a layup. The Student Princes battled back with a 7-0 run to make it a 35-34 ballgame at 16:47 when freshman forward Jackson Blue made a short jumper.
 
BW responded with an 11-2 run to take its larest lead of 10 points at 46-36 with 13:17 left when Ameen made a layup. Again the Student Princes came back with an 8-2 run to make it 48-44 with 9:31 left when freshman forward Josh Pollner made a jumper.
 
BW pushed its lead back to seven on five occasions with the last at 59-52 when Ferrell made a hook shot at 5:13. Again the Student Princes came back to close the deficit to 59-55 at 4:18 when Petrie canned a triple. But BW answered right back with a 12-4 run to build its biggest lead of the game at 71-59 with 1:28 left when senior Academic All-OAC guard Ben Umbel (Poland/ Seminary) made two foul shots.
 
This Saturday, January 19, the BW men and women will host an OAC doubleheader that will be televised by SportsTime Ohio. The women's game is at 2:00 p.m. and is the Fourth Annual "Take a Kid to the Game" Day.  The men tipoff at 4:00 p.m.
 
The women's game also will air on STO on Saturday night at 11:00 p.m. and again on Monday, January 21 at 7:00 a.m.  The men's game will air on Saturday night at 9:00 p.m., on Sunday, Jan. 20 at 4:00 p.m. and on Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 7:00 a.m.
