BEREA, OHIO – Three Yellow Jackets each scored 16 points as the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Wilmington College, 70-62, today (Saturday, February 2, 2013) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center. The win was BW's third straight and 13th in its last 14 contests. 

With its victory, BW improved to 16-5 overall and 11-3 in the OAC. With its loss, Wilmington dropped to 10-11 overall and 7-7 in the OAC.

Junior two-time All-OAC forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick), senior Academic All-OAC guard Ben Umbel (Poland/ Seminary) and junior All-OAC guard Kevin Krakowiak (Parma Heights/ Holy Name) each scored 16 points to pace BW. Payne also led BW with a career-high-tying 13 rebounds, and Umbel's 16 points were a season-high. Wilmington was led by senior forward Malcolm Heard II's 16 markers.

With his 16 points today, Payne now has 1,095 career points and moved into a tie for 26th place on the all-time scoring list with 26 current Brunswick High School Head Coach Joe Mackey (1991-95), who had 1,095 points. Today, he surpassed No. 27 John Popp (1947-50), who had 1,090 points. Next up is No. 25 current BW Assistant Coach Jon Carroll (1999-2003), who had 1,098 points.

The Quakers jumped out to an early, 2-0 lead at the 19:41 mark when senior center Miles Bankson scored. BW came right back with a 9-0 run, including six straight points by Umbel, to lead 9-3 at 17:57.

After Wilmington closed the gap to 11-7, BW scored five of the next seven points to lead 16-9 at 14:33 when Umbel made a three-pointer. The lead grew to 13 points at 28-15 with 10:15 left when sophomore point guard Jaron Crowe (Mentor) canned a trey.

Wilmington came back with a 10-3 run to cut the deficit to 31-25 with 6:25 left when junior guard Taylor Wellman made a triple. The Jackets responded with a 9-2 run of their own to restore the 13-point advantage at 40-27 with 3:31 left when Payne scored a layup, was fouled and made the free throw. The Quakers closed on a 7-2 run, but BW led 42-34 at the intermission.

BW regained a 10-point lead at the start of the second stanza at 46-36 when Payne made two foul shots at 16:54. The Quakers responded with a 9-0 run to close to 46-45 with 13:07 remaining when Berlin made a layup.

After BW increased its lead to three, Wilmington scored four straight to take a 49-48 lead with 10:29 left when Heard made a layup.  When Umbel made a layup at 10:14 to give BW a 50-49 lead, the Jackets never trailed again.

The lead grew to six on three separate occasions with the last at 62-56 with 3:46 left when Krakowiak made a three-pointer.  After the Quakers cut the deficit to 62-60 with 2:54 left on a Heard triple, BW began to make its foul shots.

The Yellow Jackets actually canned their final 10 charity tosses in the last 4:29 overall, including four by Krakowiak and two by Umbel in the last 34.1 seconds. 

The Yellow Jacket men are back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 6 when they travel to University Heights to play OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center at 7:00 p.m.
 
On Saturday, February 16, the BW women and men host OAC-rival Muskingum University in a doubleheader in Berea. The twinbill will be taped by S&S Video Productions and televised by regional cable TV network SportsTime Ohio.  The women's game will air on Saturday night at 11:00 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 17 at 4:00 p.m. and Monday, Feb. 18 at 5:00 a.m. The men's game will air on Saturday night at 9:00 p.m., Sunday at 2:00 p.m. and Monday at 7:00 a.m.  BW has televised more of its athletics events on regional cable television than any other small college in the country.
