No. 23 BW Defeats Wilmington on Homecoming

BEREA, OHIO – Sophomore runningback Sebastian Zuluaga (Naples, Fla. Gulf Coast) scored a pair of touchdowns  as the 23rd-ranked (American Football Coaches Association poll) Baldwin Wallace University football team handed Ohio Athletic Conference foe Wilmington College its 32nd straight loss today (Saturday, October 6, 2012) with a 49-17 Homecoming victory before 5,007 fans on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium.

Fans also can watch today's game on SportsTime Ohio tonight at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 14 at 5:00 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 5:00 a.m. and Thursday, Oct. 18 at 12:00 noon.
Zuluaga scored on runs of 14 and 13 yards and led BW to its second straight win and sixth in its last seven games dating back to last season.

The Yellow Jackets led 21-0 after one quarter, 42-7 at halftime and 49-14 after three periods. With its victory, BW is now 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the OAC and has beaten Wilmington four straight times, including outscoring the Quakers 190-31 during that time span, and now leads the all-time series, 11-3. With its loss, Wilmington is 0-6 overall and 0-5 in the OAC and has not won a game since a 24-16 victory against John Carroll University on Oct. 3, 2009.

Offensively for BW, senior quarterback Ryan O'Rourke (Avon) completed 10-of-13 passes for 88 yards and two TD's. Freshman backup quarterback Michael Slack (Casselberry, Fla./ Pine Castle Christian Academy) led the running attack with a career-high 74 yards with a TD. Junior All-OAC flanker Josiah Holt (Elyria/ Grafton Midview) was next with 71 yards in four attempts with a TD, and Zuluaga was third with 54 yards in 10 attempts with a TD.  Junior wide Brandon Mahaffey (Elyria/ Avon Senior) led the receivers with three catches for 40 yards with a TD. The defense was led by junior middle linebacker Michael Stacchiotti (Girard) with six stops. He now has 31 in the past three games.

Offensively for Wilmington, sophomore QB Brandon Arehart completed 20-of-28 passes for 194 yards with a TD. The running game was led by junior Tyrell Richardson with 61 yards in nine attempts nand freshman RB Alex Koyfis had 50 yards in 10 attempts with a TD. The receivers were led by Koyfis with five grabs for 63 yards with a TD. The defense was led by sophomore LB Gunner Calhoun with a game-high 12 tackles.

In the first quarter, BW gained a 7-0 lead at the 12:58 mark when senior Academic All-OAC QB Ryan O'Rourke (Avon/ Senior) threw a 7-yard TD pass to Mahaffey. Junior placekicker Chris Mohler (Kent/ Roosevelt) booted the PAT to complete a 6-play and 40-yard drive in 2:02.  The lead grew to 14-0 at the 8:59 mark when sophomore RB Nolan Sordyl (Gurnee, Ill./ Warren Township) scored on a 1-yard run and Mohler added the PAT to cap a 7-play and 47-yard drive in 2:29.

BW increased its lead to 21-0 at the 7:15 mark when Holt sped 53 yards to paydirt and Mohler added his third straight PAT to cap a 2-play and 60-yard drive in 41 seconds. The TD was set up when Stacchiotti  forced a fumble and junior defensive end Sam Gordon (Broadview Heights/ University School) recovered.

In the second quarter, Zuluaga gave BW a 28-0 lead at 11:44 when he sped 14 yards to the endzone and Mohler made his fourth PAT. It was an 8-play and 80 yard drive in 3:12, and followed a missed Quaker field goal.  BW led 35-0 at the 6:40 mark when Slack scored from one yard out. Mohler added the PAT to cap a 7-play and 47-yard drive in 3:14. The drive was set up when senior cornerback Brandon Russo (Olmsted Falls) forced a fumble and junior CB Kevin Johnson (Maple Hts./ Cleveland St. Ignatius) grabbed the loose ball.

Wilmington got on the scoreboard and cut the deficit to 35-7 with 5:21 left before in the intermission when freshman RB Alex Koyfis scored on a 29-yard screen pass from Arehart and senior PK Max Gabbard added the PAT. The score capped 4-play and 75-yard drive in 1:19. BW ended the half by scoring with 1:33 left when O'Rourke found sophomore fullback Paul Guhde (Kirtland) for his first career TD on a 3-yard pass and Mohler booted his sixth PAT. The score capped a 8-play and 65-yard drive in 3:28.

In the third quarter, the Quakers opened the session when Koyfis scored on a 1-yard run at the 5:38 mark  and Gabbard added the PAT to complete a 16-play and 79-yard drive in 9:15 to make the score  42-14. BW ended the quarter by extending its lead to 49-14 at the 4:16 mark when Zuluaga scored his second TD of the day on a 13-yard run and Mohler added the PAT. The score occurred after a BW fumble recovery, a return and a personal foul on the Quakers.

In the fourth quarter, Wilmington scored the final points of the game when Gabbard nailed a 34-yard field goal at the 12:48 mark to cap a 11-play and 58-yard drive.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action next Saturday, October 20 when they travel to Columbus, Ohio to play OAC-rival Capital University at Bernlohr Stadium at 2:00 p.m.
