No.15 BW Beats JCU, 32-28, in Thriller

 
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OHIO --  Junior wide receiver Josiah Holt (Elyria/ Grafton Midview) accounted for 327 total yards and three touchdowns as the 15th-ranked Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets beat Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University, 32-28, today (Saturday, September 15, 2012) in the 24th Annual Cuyahoga Gold Bowl Game on Wasmer Field in Don Shula Stadium at John Carroll University.  It was BW's first win at JCU since 1998.
 
Holt caught a game-high six passes for 173 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winner of 84 yards with just 1:21 remaining, ran the ball seven times for 41 yards and returned four kickoffs for 113 yards to account for his 327 total yards.  
 
With its win, BW is 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the OAC and leads the all-time series, which dates back to 1923, by a 25-23-4 count. The victory also gives BW a 13-11 advantage in the Cuyahoga Gold Bowl series which began in 1989.  With its loss, JCU is now 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the OAC

Tonight's game will be telecast by SportsTime Ohio at 11:00 p.m. and again on Tuesday at 5:00 a.m.

Offensively in addition to Holt for BW, senior quarterback Ryan O'Rourke (Avon) completed 13-of-28 passes for 266 yards with all three of his TD passes going to Holt. He also ran the ball eight times for 23 yards and a score. Senior running back Tyler Lohr (Kent/ Roosevelt) led the running game with 92 yards in 17 attempts. The defense was led by junior free safety Zach Barley with a game-high 11 tackles.

Offensively for JCU, sophomore transfer QB Mark Myers completed 18-of-32 passes for 236 yards and two TDs but threw a critical interception that "iced" the Yellow Jacket victory. Senior tight end Ben Madden had a team-high five catches for 35 yards and a TD. Junior RB DaQuan Grobsmith had a game-high 137 yards rushing in 19 attempts with a TD and caught four passes for 34 yards. In addition, senior Sean Kuenzig ran for 85 yards in 13 carries with a TD. Sophomore cornerback Ryan Winchell had a game-high-tying 11 tackles.

The game was tied at 7-7 after one quarter, JCU led 14-10 at halftime and 21-17 after three quarters.
 
In the first quarter, BW gained a 7-0 lead at the 7:43 mark when O'Rourke passed 11 yards to Holt and junior placekicker Chris Mohler (Kent/ Roosevelt) added the PAT kick. The scoring play completed a 9-play and 66-yard drive. JCU tied the score at 7-7 at the 4:55 mark when Myers passed 67 yards to senior WR Lane Robilotto on the first play of its drive and sophomore PK Kresimir Ivkovic made the PAT kick.
 
In the second quarter, JCU took a 14-7 lead at the 5:13 mark when Grobsmith ran three yards to the endzone and Ivkovic booted the PAT. The Grobsmith TD capped a 7-play and 67-yard drive. The Yellow Jackets drew to 14-10 with one second left before the intermission when Mohler booted a 27-yard field goal to cap a 9-play and 64-yard drive.
 
In the third quarter, Holt took control as he accounted for all 92 yards and gave BW a 17-14 lead when he ran back the second half kickoff 50 yards to the JCU 42-yard line, then ran the ball 11 yards to the 31 and ended the drive by catching a 31-yard TD pass from O'Rourke. Mohler added the PAT kick to cap a 2-play and 42-yard drive. JCU regained the lead at 21-17 at the 6:23 mark when Myers passed one yard to Madden and Ivkovic added the PAT to complete a 14-play and 82-yard drive.

In the fourth quarter, JCU increased its lead to 28-17 at the 12:38 mark when Kuenzig ran three yards to paydirt and Ivkovic booted the PAT to complete a 7-play and 80-yard drive. Undaunted, BW came right back and drove 57 yards in seven plays and made it a 28-25 game with 9:28 left when O'Rourke snuck into the endzone from one yard away and then threw a 2-point conversion pass to senior TE Aaron Manders (Toledo/ Cardinal Stritch).

Following two JCU and one BW possessions, the Yellow Jackets took over at their own 16-yard line with 1:32 remaining. On the first play, O'Rourke found Holt wide open deep down the sideline and he went 84 yards to the endzone to earn back the lead at 32-28 with 1:21 left. Mohler added the PAT following the Holt catch and run.

JCU got the ball back at its own 22-yard line awith 1:15 left in the game. Following an incompletion, Myers completed four straight passes and moved the Blue Streaks to the BW 26-yard line with 24 seconds remaining.  Then sophomore cornerback Austin Cordova (Perry) made the defensive play of the game for BW when he picked off Myers.

BW is back in action next Saturday, Sept. 22 when it travels to New Concord to face OAC-rival Muskingum University at McConagha Stadium at 1:30 p.m. and next plays at home on Saturday, Sept. 29 versus Otterbein University on Shriners' Day at 1:30 p.m. JCU is at Otterbein in Westerville at 1:30 p.m.
