Baldwin-Wallace University Defeats Muskingum, 27-14, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College football team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Muskingum University, 27-14, today (Saturday, October 17, 2009) on Professor Appreciation Day on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea before 1,758 fans.  This was BW's fourth straight win versus the Fighting Muskies and increased its all-time series advantage to 38-13-2 with the first meeting occurring in 1917.
 
With its win, the Yellow Jackets are now 2-4 overall and 2-3 in the OAC and next play on Saturday, Oct. 24 in Tiffin versus Heidelberg University. With its loss, Muskingum is now 1-5 overall and 1-4 in the OAC.
 
The Yellow Jackets led 7-0 after the first quarter, 20-0 at halftime and 27-7 at the end of the third stanza.

B-W opened the scoring at the 12:03 mark of the first quarter when sophomore running back Tim Miker (Parma/ Senior) sped nine yards to paydirt to cap a five-play and 54-yard drive in 1:35. Junior placekicker Brad Pollock (Brecksville/ Brecksville-Broadview Heights) them made the point-after-touchdown kick.

The Yellow Jackets increased their lead to 14-0 at the 14:53 mark of the second quarter when junior RB Kyrell Crook (Columbus/ deSales) rambled 27 yards to the end zone and Pollock made the PAT. The play capped an 11-play and 76 yards drive in 4:57.
B-W built its lead to 20-0 at the 2:31 mark of the second quarter when Miker scored his second rushing TD of the contest on a 3-yard run but Pollock's PAT kick was missed. The scoring play capped a nine-play and 50-yard drive in 4:29.
The Jackets led 27-0 at the 7:42 mark of the third period when Crook scored his second TD of the afternoon on a 2-yard run and Pollock made the PAT boot. The run capped an 11-play and 44-yrad drive in 4:16.
The Fighting Muskies finally got on the scoreboard  at the 2:08 mark of the third quarter when junior quarterback Jake Burns threw a 31-yard TD pass to junior wide receiver Ben Smith, who made a spectacular catch in the left corner of the endzone. Freshman PK Nick Raymond added the PAT kick to cap a three-play and 58-yard drive in 1:38.
Muskingum then closed to within 27-14 with 7:06 left when Burns connected on a 61-yard TD pass to senior WR Dwight Sutton and Raymond made the PAT. The score capped a four-play and 82-yard drive in 1:58. 

Offensively, B-W was led by senior QB Anthony Gardner (Rocky River/ Lakewood St. Edward), Miker,Crook and sophomore WR Devon Jennings (Euclid). Gardner completed 17-of-29 for 167 yards with one interception.  Miker ran for a game-high 107 yards in 24 attempts with and two TD. Crook had 89 yards rushing in 17 attempts with two TD and caught two passes for 41 more yards. Jennings caught a career-high 12 passes for 105 yards. The Yellow Jacket defense was led by junior outside linebacker Ryan Kish (Amherst/ Steele) with seven tackles.

The Muskingum offense was led by Burns, sophomore RB Palmer Smith and Smith.  Burns completed 19-of-45  for 220 with two TD and two interceptions, and he ran 13 times for 20 yards. Smith led all Muskie runners with 40 yards in nine attempts. Smith topped the Muskie receivers with seven catches for 84 yards and a TD grab. The Fighting Muskie defense was led by sophomore strong safety Anthony Zarcone with 11 tackles and sophomore OLB Ethan Wetzel had 10 stops.
