Baldwin-Wallace College Football Team Defeats Wilmington College, 28-14, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College football team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference foe Wilmington College, 28-14, on Seniors' Day on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea before 2,757 fans.

With its win, the Yellow Jackets are now 3-6 overall and 3-5 in the OAC and end their season next Saturday, November 14 when they travel to Columbus to play 13th-ranked Capital University at Bernlohr Stadium at 1:30 p.m.  With its loss, the Quakers are now 1-8 overall and 1-7 in the OAC and end their season next Saturday versus 17th-ranked Ohio Northern University at Williams Stadium at 1:30 p.m.

B-W led 7-0 after one quarter, 21-7 at halftime and 28-7 after three quarters.

The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring with five seconds left in the first quarter when junior running back John McGraw (North Ridgeville) sped 23 yards to the endzone for his seventh rushing touchdown of the season. Junior placekicker Brad Pollock (Brecksville/ Brecksville-Broadview Heights) then made the point-after-TD kick to make the score 7-0 and cap a nine-play and 72-yard drive.

The B-W offense and defense were dominant in the first stanza. The offense outgained Wilmington 165-4 and ran 32 plays compared to just six for the Quakers.

The Quakers even the score at 7-7 at the 9:00 mark when senior quarterback Billy Blackburn threw an eight-yard TD pass to junior tight end Darren Howard and freshman PK Max Gabbard made the PAT to cap an 11-play and 61-yard drive.  

B-W regained the lead at 14-7 at the 6:57 mark of the second quarter when senior QB Anthony Gardner (Rocky River/ Lakewood St. Edward) scored on a seven-yard run and Pollock made the PAT kick to cap a six-play and 58-yard drive in 1:57.

The Yellow Jackets increased their lead to 21-7 with 20 seconds left before halftime when McGraw scored his second rushing TD of the day and eighth overall on a one-yard run. Pollock's PAT kick was good and capped a 13-play and 58-yard drive in 5:28.

In the first half, B-W dominated in yards gained (280-60), offensive plays (54-23) and time of possession (22:07 to 7:51).

B-W increased its lead to 28-7 at the 4:15 mark of the third quarter when Gardner threw a five-yard TD pass to sophomore wide receiver Aaron Hurd (Tiffin/ Columbian) for his first career TD catch. Pollock's fourth straight good PAT boot sealed a 12-play and 79-yard drive that took 3:38 off the game clock.

Wilmington scored its final TD with eight seconds left in the contest when Blackburn threw a four-yard TD pass to senior WR Luke Green and Gabbard made the PAT kick to cap a eight-play and 68-yard drive in 1:39.

B-W was led offensively by McGraw, senior RB Kyrell Crook (Columbus/ deSales), Gardner and senior WR John Stock (Fairview Park/ Fairview). McGraw ran for a game-high 129 yards in 23 attempts with two TD.Crook had 70 yards in 21 attempts. Gardner completed 16-of-26 aerials for 146 yards and a TD and ran for 39 yards and a TD in eight attempts. Stock caught a game-high six passes for 64 yards.  Defensively, sophomore safety Ryan Dugan (Mentor) led the way with eight tackles, an interception and two other pass breakups.

Wilmington was led on offense by Blackburn, who completed 13-of-37 passes for 121 yards with two TD and two interceptionsx and ran six times for 16 yards  The leading Quaker rusher was freshman RB Tyrell Richardson with 37 yards in 10 attempts. The top receiver was Howard with three grabs for 22 yards and a score.  Defensively, junior LB Bryce Martin led the way with a game-high 21 tackles.
