Yellow Jacket Football Team Falls at Top-Ranked Mount Union

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College football team lost 30-0 at Ohio Athletic Conference rival and number-one ranked Mount Union College tonight (Saturday, October 3, 2009) at Mount Union Stadium in Alliance.

With the loss, the Yellow Jackets fall to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the OAC. The Purple Raiders improve to 4-0 and 3-0 in the OAC. B-W returns home next Saturday, October 10 to host Otterbein for the College's Homecoming game at 2:00 p.m.

Mount Union got on the board at the 9:22 mark of the first quarter when Jay Carpenter connected on a 32-yard field goal to cap an eight-play and 13-yard drive set up by a Vince Petruziello 36-yard punt return.

Both defenses tightened until midway through the second quarter when Mount Union's Scott Panchik scored on a one-yard touchdown run to cap a six-play and 26-yard drive set up by a Drew McClain interception. A Carpenter extra point made the score 10-0 with 7:31 left in the first half.

B-W senior cornerback Pete Taylor (North Olmsted) returned the ensuing kickoff 49 yards to give the Yellow Jackets good field position, but the offense was unable to capitalize and was forced to punt the ball back to Mount Union.

The Raiders then took the ball 94 yards on eight plays and scored on a seven-yard TD run by Cecil Shorts. A missed extra point kept the score at 16-0 heading into the half.

Mount Union opened the second half with a seven-play and 62-yard drive that took 3:42 off the clock and ended in a 13-yard TD run by Panchik. Carpenter's PAT made the score 23-0 with 8:26 left in the third.

The Purple Raiders added another TD early in the fourth to bring the final score to 30-0.
