Otterbein Defeats Baldwin-Wallace, 21-17, on Homecoming in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College football team lost to Ohio Athletic Conference rival and 13th-ranked Otterbein College, 21-17, today (Saturday, October 10, 2009) on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea on Homecoming before 5,657 fans.
 
With their loss, the Yellow Jackets are now 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the OAC. The visiting Cardinals are now 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the OAC. B-W remains at home and plays Muskingum University next Saturday, October 17 at 1:30 p.m.
 
The Yellow Jackets led 10-7 after one quarter, Otterbein led 21-17 at halftime and at the end of the third stanza.

B-W opened the scoring at 3-0 at the 12:16 mark of the first quarter when junior placekicker Brad Pollock (Brecksville/ Brecksville-Broadview Heights) booted a 24-yard field goal to cap a seven-play, 64-yard drive in 2:44. The score was set up by a 50-yard run by sophomore running back Tim Miker (Parma/ Senior).

The Yellow Jackets increased their lead to 10-0 at the 6:26 mark when junior RB John McGraw (North Ridgeville) scored on a one-yard run and then Pollock made the point-after-touchdown kick. The score capped a six-play and 23-yard drive that was set up by an interception and subsequent 67-yard return by senior safety Ryan Clokey (Massillon/ Perry).

Otterbein cut the lead to 10-7 at the 39-second mark when sophomore quarterback Austin Schlosser threw a 14-yard TD pass to senior wide receiver Ryan Rowley and junior PK David Brewer tacked on the PAT. The score capped an eight-play and 71-yard drive in 5:41.

The Cardinals took a 14-10 advantage at the 8:53 of the second quarter when Schlosser threw a five-yard TD pass to Rowley and Brewer tacked on the PAT kick. The score was set up by a 35-yard pass from Schlosser to senior WR Dan Gendron on the first play of the drive and then a 22-yard run by senior RB Eric Yates on the second play. The total drive was six plays and 75 yards in 2:38.
B-W regained the lead at 17-14 at the 4:20 mark before the intermission when senior All-OAC QB Anthony Gardner (Rocky River/ Lakewood St. Edward) threw a 15-yard TD pass to junior RB Kyrell Crook (Columbus/ DeSales) and Pollock made the PAT. The drive covered nine plays and 56 yards in 4:20.

Otterbein responded and took back the lead at 21-17 at the 2:28 mark when senior RB Colton Coy sped nine yards to paydirt and Brewer made the PAT. The drive was six plays and 63 yards in 1:44.

There was no second half scoring.

For B-W offensively, Miker, who earned the Frank Ropollo Homecoming Player of the Game award, rushed for a game-high 119 yards in 20 attempts and caught two passes for 11 yards. Gardner completed nine-of-17 passes for 68 yards with the TD pass to CrookCrook carried the ball 14 times for 87 yards and caught the 15-yard TD pass.

Defensively, sophomore cornerback Ryan Dugan (Mentor) led the way with 10 tackles and Clokey had eight and an interception.

For Otterbein offensively, Schlosser completed 12-of-20 passes for 175 yards with two TD and one interception and ran for 26 yards in nine attempts. Senior RB Eric Yates ran for 95 yards in 11 attempts and Coy ran for 64 yards in 14 attempts with a TD. The leading receiver was Rowley with six catches for 43 and two TD. Defensively, the Cardinals were led in tackles by senior linebacker Donnie Reinhart with 11 stops.
