Women's Volleyball Earns First Conference Win With Sweep of Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Baldwin Wallace University women's volleyball team swept Wilmington College in three sets for its first Ohio Athletic Conference win of the season on Hermann Court in Fred Raizk Arena. 

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an huge lead in the first set thanks to a pair of kills from junior middle hitter Sydney Simonson (Sullivan/Black River) and a few Wilmington attack errors allowing BW to take set one. The Quakers would take the lead in the second set but right-side hitter Allison Weiner (Westerville/St. Francis DeSales) and junior outside hitter Sam Rueda (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) led the Yellow Jackets back to take the set by recording three kills each. After being tied at 27 points a piece in a back-and-forth set three, junior middle hitter Alyssa Saghy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) would give BW the lead with a kill and the Jackets would go on to complete the series sweep. 

BW Leaders (8-9, 1-2 OAC)

  • Weiner led the team with 11 kills while Simonson added 10 kills 
  • Rueda totaled eight kills, eight digs, and two blocks
  • Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference setter Olivia Zawadzki (Hilliard/Darby) finished with 22 assists, nine digs, and two service aces
  • Senior All-OAC setter Lauren Gardner (Avon/Saint Joseph Academy) and sophomore defensive specialist Jamie Snell (Strongsville) anchored the defense with 13 and 10 digs respectively

Wilmington Leaders (9-9, 1-2 OAC)

  • Junior defensive specialist Emma Schroer recorded 21 digs
  • Junior setter Meliss Hansen totaled 26 assists and eight digs
  • Sophomore right-side hitter Sarah Brown added nine kills

First Set (BW 25-13)

  • Yellow Jackets led in kills 15-7
  • Yellow Jackets hit .481
  • Quakers hit -.061

Second Set (BW 25-21)

  • Yellow Jackets led in kills 14-11
  • Yellow Jackets hit .214
  • Quakers hit .179

Third Set (BW 29-27)

  • Yellow Jackets led in kills 16-11
  • Yellow Jackets hit .125
  • Quakers hit .045
