Women's Volleyball Earns First Victory of Season, Sweeps Suffolk (Mass.)

SANDUSKY, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's volleyball team won its first match of the season as it defeated  Suffolk (Mass.) College in straight sets on the final day of the Great Lakes Crossover hosted by Heidelberg University at the Cedar Point Sports Center

 

BW (1-2) beat Suffolk (1-2) by set scores of 25-14, 25-20, and 25-20.

SUMMARY

BW jumped out to a commanding 15-5 lead in the first set by scoring seven straight points forcing a Suffolk timeout. The Yellow Jackets would go on to score five more straight points to give them an overwhelming 22-10 lead on their way to a 25-14 first set victory.

In set two, BW took a 9-6 lead thanks to a couple of Suffolk errors, but the Rams would fight back to regain the 12-9 lead with six unanswered points. The set remained a tight competition until the Yellow Jackets scored six straight of their own capped off by a kill from junior Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference hitter Allison Weiner (Westerville/St. Francis Desales) to win the second set by a score of 25-20.

The Yellow Jackets fell to an early 12-8 deficit again in set three, but soon tied it up at 13 and never looked back as BW took the third set by a score of 25-20.

KEY STATS

  • 12 - Junior outside hitter Sam Rueda (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) led the Yellow Jackets with 12 kills
  • 29 – Sophomore setter Katarina Blazetic (DeLand, Fla./DeLand) recorded a career high 29 assists and added 8 digs
  • 16 – Senior All-OAC libero Lauren Gardner (Avon/Saint Joseph Academy) contributed 16 digs
  • Weiner finished the game with 10 total kills and 2 digs

The Yellow Jackets are back in action Wednesday, September 6 at 7:00 p.m. where they will travel to Hiram for a non-conference matchup against Hiram College in the Price Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
