Volleyball Team Falls to Thiel (Pa.) and Hiram in Season-Opening Tri-Match

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team opened the 2009 season today (Tuesday, September 1) by losing a pair of matches to visiting Thiel College (Pa.) and Hiram College in tri-match action at the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.

The Yellow Jackets lost 3-1 in the opener to Thiel by scores of 25-21, 25-22, 20-25 and 25-21. Versus Hiram, B-W was defeated 3-0 by scores of 25-19, 25-18 and 25-17.

In the Thiel match, B-W was led offensively by junior Abbey Thompson (Lorain/ Clearview) with 11 kills and junior setter Casey Passen (Ashville/ Teays Valley) with 30 set assists. Defensively, freshman Natalie Emmons (Ashland/ Senior) paced the Yellow Jackets with 26 digs and Passen added 13.

Versus Hiram, the Yellow Jacket offense was paced by Passen with 21 assists and four kills. Defensively,Emmons recorded 17 digs.

In other volleyball action at B-W on Tuesday, Walsh University defeated Thiel by a count of 3-0 with scores of 25-14, 25-16 and 25-11.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action this Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 5-6 at the Kalamazoo (Mich.) College Hornet Invitational. On Saturday, B-W plays Franklin (Ind.) at 3:00 p.m. and Centre (Ky.) at 7:00 p.m. Tournament consolation and championship rounds begin at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday.
