Women’s Tennis Sweeps Home Opening Doubleheader

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team swept a pair of matches on its home opener inside the Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse.

BW (9-7, 2-2 OAC) defeated Wittenberg University (4-13) in first match of the day by a final score of 8-1 in non-conference action.   The Yellow Jackets then won an Ohio Athletic Conference match against Marietta College (5-10, 1-2 OAC) by a final score of 9-0.

Against Wittenberg, BW held a 2-1 advantage after doubles.  The number one tandem of senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC player Kelsey Blatt (Tallmadge) and freshman Imani Robinson (Cincinnati/School for Creative & Performing Arts) won by a score of 8-2.  The duo of sophomore Shannon Finkenthal (Beachwood) and freshman Kathleen Moser (Strongsville) captured third doubles by a score of 8-3.

In singles action, the Yellow Jackets won all six matches to secure the win.   Blatt took first singles by scores of 6-3 and 6-4.  Robinson earned the win at second singles by scores of 6-2 and 6-1.  Junior Claire Watts (Medina/Highland) captured third singles by scores of 6-3 and 6-2.  Senior Mackenzie Donalson (Hilliard/Davidson) won fourth singles by identical scores of 6-2.  Sophomore Kelly Peskura (Strongsville) took fifth singles by identical scores of 6-1. Finkenthal won at six singles by forfeit. 

Against Marietta, BW held a 3-0 advantage after doubles play. Blatt and Robinson won at first doubles by a score of 8-2 to improve their record to a team-best 11-7 on the year.   Donalson and Watts captured second doubles by a score of 8-4 to up their record to 8-10 on the season.  Finkenthal and Moser took third doubles by a score of 8-2 and now are 6-5 this season.

In singles action, the Yellow Jackets won every match to secure the doubleheader sweep.  Blatt won first singles by scores of 6-2 and 6-3 to improve to 10-9 on the season.   Robinson swept second singles by identical scores of 6-0 and is now 11-8 on the year.  Watts took third singles by scores of 6-4 and 6-2 to up her record to 9-10 this season.  Donalson won fourth singles by scores of 6-1 and 6-2 to improve her record to a team-best 13-5.  Peskura captured fifth singles by identical scores of 6-0 and is now 8-6 on the season.  Finkenthal took sixth singles by scores of 6-4 and 6-0 to improve to 8-7 on the year.

BW is back in action on Tuesday, April 12 when it travels to Tiffin for an OAC match against Heidelberg University at 3:30 p.m.  The next home match is on Friday, April 15 when the Yellow Jackets host a rescheduled non-conference match against NCAA Division II Clarion (Pa.) University on the Pop Collins Tennis Courts at 3:30 p.m.
