Women’s Tennis Wins Hard Fought OAC Opener against Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis won a hard-fought Ohio Athletic Conference season opening match against the University of Mount Union by a final score of 5-4.

BW (7-5, 1-0 OAC) won its third straight match, including five of its last six matches, and snapped a six-match losing skid to Mount Union (7-4, 0-1 OAC).  The Yellow Jackets last victory against the Purple Raiders came on April 12, 2011 when BW shutout Mount Union by a score of 9-0 in Alliance. 

BW trailed 2-1 after doubles play.  The first tandem of senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC player Kelsey Blatt (Tallmadge) and freshman Imani Robinson (Cincinnati /School for Creative & Performing Arts) picked up the lone victory as they won by a score of 8-4.

In singles action, the Yellow Jackets won four of six matches to secure the victory.  Blatt won at first singles by scores of 6-4 and 6-3 to improve to 8-7 on the year.  Robinson took number two by identical scores of 6-2 and is now 9-6 in her inuaguaral season.  Senior Mackenzie Donalson (Hilliard/Davidson) secured fourth singles by scores of 7-5 and 6-2 and improved to a team-best 11-4.  Sophomore Shannon Finkenthal (Beachwood) took number six in a hard fought two set match that needed a tie-breaker in each set.  Finkenthal won by scores of 7-6 (8-6) and 7-6 (7-5).

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Friday, April 1 when the team plays its first outdoor home match as it hosts NCAA Division II Clarion (Pa.) University on the Pop Collins Tennis Courts at 3 p.m.  BW returns to OAC play on Saturday, April 2 when it travels to Westerville to face Otterbein University on the Otterbein Tennis Courts at 1 p.m.
