BW Women’s Lacrosse Holds Off Late Rally to Defeat Saint Vincent (Pa.)

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's lacrosse team held off a late rally by Saint Vincent (Pa.) College to secure the non-conference victory by a final score of 14-13 on Tressel Field in The George Finnie Stadium.

BW (4-2) was led by freshman midfielder Sierra Thomas (Medina) who scored a game-high tying four goals and added one assist. Senior midfielder Colleen Bodkin (East Aurora, N.Y.) and freshman midfielders Maddie Russell (Lakewood/Rocky River) each tallied three goals. Junior midfielder Cara Wood (Shaker Heights/Laurel) contributed two goals.  Freshman Katie Kocher (Rocky River) had a game-best four assists.

Saint Vincent (4-1) was led by Kaley Burkardt with a game-high tying four goals and two assists. Maggie Garvey tallied three goals while Helena Shoplik and Molly Snyder each contributed two goals.  Snyder also had a game-best three assists.

The Bearcats took leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before the Yellow Jackets scored three unanswered goals to take a 4-2 lead on Russell's second goal of the game with 10:44 remaining in the opening period. St. Vincent scored two unanswered goals to tie the game at 4-4 when Molly Snyder found the back of the net at the 9:00 mark.

Each team scored two goals over the remainder of the half and was tied 6-6 at the intermission.

In the second half, the Bearcats jumped out to a 9-7 lead before the BW regained the lead at 11-10 when Thomas scored her third goal of the game with 7:36 remaining.  After the Yellow Jackets took a 14-11, St. Vincent cut the lead down to 14-13 on a goal by Snyder at the 31 second mark.

In goal, senior Bridget Walsh (Elyria/Elyria Catholic) played all 60 minutes, allowed13 goals and made eight saves as she improved to 4-2 overall.

Both teams had 29 shots but BW held a 38-24 advantage in ground balls.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action this Sunday, March 23 when it hosts NCAA Division II Ursuline University in a rescheduled game on Tressel Field at 1 p.m.
