BW Women’s Lacrosse Wins 16-6 at Columbia (S.C.)

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Junior midfielder Cara Wood (Shaker Heights/Laurel) and junior attacker Nikki Bowman (Ashland/ Hillsdale) each scored four goals as the Baldwin Wallace University women's lacrosse team defeated host Columbia (S.C.) College, 16-6, at Younts Soccer Stadium in the final match of its two-match Spring Break trip. 

On Wednesday, the Yellow Jackets lost to powerful Curry (Mass.) College in Palm Beach, Florida.

With its win, the Yellow Jackets are 2-2 overall and next play on Wednesday, March 19 at NCAA Division II Walsh University at 6:00 p.m. Columbia is 0-10 overall.

In addition to her foul goals, Wood had two assists and five draw controls. Also for BW, freshman midfielder Maddie Russell (Rocky River) had two goals and an assist and senior captain Colleen Bodkin (East Aurora, N.Y./ East Aurora) had two goals.  Rounding out the scoring for BW were freshman attacker Kelsey Johnson (Carmel, Ind./ Park Tudor), freshman midfielder Sierra Thomas (Medina), sophomore defender Tia Esbenschade (Wooster) and senior midfielder Ellen Fedick (Rochester, N.Y./ Our Lady of Mercy) each had a goal.

Freshman midfielder Katie Kocher (Rocky River) led with three assists, senior attacker Becky Russell (Glenshaw, Pa./ Shaler Area) had two and Fedick had one.

BW outshot the Koalas, 35-14, had an 18-6 advantage in draw controls, won the battle of ground balls with 40 and caused 15 turnovers.

BW led 2-0 at 2:53 when Kelsey Johnson scored unassisted before Columbia tied it at 2-2. The Yellow Jackets scored five straight goals and took a 7-2 lead at 13:25 when Bowman scored. After the Koalas made it 7-3, the Jackets scored the next four goals to lead 11-3 at 25:51 when Bowman scored again with a Wood assist.  The teams traded goals and BW went into halftime winning, 12-4.

In the second half, BW had the first two goals to build a 14-4 advantage at 42:17 when Maddie Russell scored via a Kocher assist. Its largest lead was 16-5 at 47:07 when Bowman scored her final goal with an assist from Becky  Russell.

The next home match is on Friday, March 21 versus St. Vincent (Pa.) College on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
