BW Women’s Lacrosse Beaten by Curry (Mass.) in Florida

PALM BEACH, FLORIDA – Freshman midfielder Sierra Thomas (Medina) scored a pair of goals, but the Baldwin Wallace University women's lacrosse team lost to Curry (Mass.) College, 15-5, in the 18th Annual Spring Fling in Palm Beach County Florida.  It was the first of two matches on the Yellow Jackets' Spring Break trip.

With its loss, the Yellow Jackets are 1-2 overall and next play on Friday, March 14 on its way back to Berea when they lay Columbia (S.C.) College at 6:00 p.m.

In addition to Thomas for BW, junior attacker Victoria Budzyn (East Aurora, N.Y./ East Aurora) and freshmen Kelsey Johnson (Carmel, Ind./ Park Tudor) and Katie Kocher (Rocky River) each had a goal.  In goal, senior Bridget Walsh (Elyria/ Catholic) allowed 15 goals and made six saves.  Curry, 2-3 overall, was led by sophomore midfielder Emma Bolton and senior attacker Haley Carey with four goals apiece. A pair of goalies made nine saves.

Curry outshot the BW, 28-18, and had a 30-14 advantage in ground balls.

The Colonels jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Kocher scored an unassisted goal at 16:35 to cut the deficit to 4-1. Following a Curry goal, Thomas scored the first of her two goals at 14:04 on a free position shot to make it 5-2. Following two more Curry goals, Budzyn scored at  5:59 with an assist from Kelsey Johnson to make it 7-3. But two more Colonel goals prior to the intermission left BW down 9-3 at halftime.

BW closed the gap to 9-4 at 27:36 of the second half when Thomas tallied her final goal, but four more Curry goals gave them a 13-4 lead at 13:20.  BW got its final goal at 11:05 when Kelsey Johnson scored with an assist from Kocher.  The Colonels added two final goals to end the scoring.

Following its match at Columbia, BW returns to Berea and then plays at NCAA Division II Walsh University on Wednesday, March 19 at  6:00 p.m. The next home match is on Friday, March 21 versus St. Vincent (Pa.) College on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
